Chapter 4 - SHADOWS AT THE MANSION

The SUV pulled through massive iron gates outside the city limits.
The Moretti estate was a grand stone fortress surrounded by tall pine trees and high walls.
Armed guards stood at every entrance, bowing their heads respectfully as Lorenzo’s car stopped.
Lorenzo stepped out first and held his hand out for me.
I hesitated, but taking his hand felt safer than fighting against an army of men.
He guided me through grand mahogany doors into a marble foyer lit by crystal chandeliers.
An elderly butler stood waiting, bowing low.
“Welcome home, Don Moretti. Miss Williams, your suite has been prepared.”
“Thank you, Antonio,” Lorenzo said. “Ensure the kitchen is stocked with whatever baking ingredients she requests.”
I looked at Lorenzo in surprise. “You built a pastry setup for me?”
“I promised you wouldn't be a prisoner,” Lorenzo said, offering a faint, rare smile.
“Baking is who you are. I would never destroy the fire that made me fall for you.”
Before I could process his words, heavy footsteps echoed down the grand staircase.
A tall man with cold gray eyes and a scar running down his cheek descended the stairs.
It was Marco Moretti, Lorenzo’s younger brother and second-in-command.
Marco looked at me with open disdain, his eyes judging my presence sharply.
“Is this the baker girl who caused you to blow up at the Halcyon, brother?” Marco asked coldly.
“Watch your tongue, Marco,” Lorenzo warned instantly, his tone instantly turning lethal.
“The rival families are closing in on our docks, Lorenzo!” Marco snapped, ignoring the threat.
“And you are bringing civilian distractions into our home!”
Lorenzo stepped between Marco and me, his posture instantly shifting to an alpha predator.

“Camila is not a distraction,” Lorenzo said coldly.
“She is my future.”
