Chapter 9 - THE TURN OF TIDES

Marco instinctively jerked his head upward at the sound of my shout.
That split-second distraction was all Lorenzo needed.
Lorenzo dropped low, sweeping his leg around and knocking Marco’s feet out from under him.
Marco crashed onto the marble floor, his gun skittering across the smooth tiles.
Lorenzo bounced up instantly, pinning Marco down with a heavy knee to his chest.
Lorenzo pressed his gun directly against Marco’s forehead.
“You dared to point a weapon at your own Don?” Lorenzo growled, his body shaking with rage.
“Do it then!” Marco spat, blood running from his lip. “Shoot your own brother!”
I rushed down the grand stairs, my heart pounding in my ears.
“Lorenzo, stop!” I begged as I reached the bottom step.
Lorenzo stopped, his hand steady on the trigger, his cold dark eyes locked on Marco.
“He tried to kill you, Camila,” Lorenzo said without turning around. “He put your life in danger.”
“If you kill him in cold blood now, you become the monster he thinks you are!” I cried out.
Lorenzo hesitated.
The air in the grand hall was agonizingly tense.
Slowly, Lorenzo lowered his weapon, clicking the safety back on.
“You’re right,” Lorenzo said quietly. “He doesn't deserve a quick death by my hands.”
Lorenzo looked up at two loyal guards who rushed into the hall.

“Lock Marco in the basement vault,” Lorenzo ordered sharply. “He will face the family council tomorrow.”
The guards grabbed Marco, dragging him away as he shouted curses at both of us.
