Chapter 11 - THE ECHOES OF BETRAYAL

The glittering lights of the Grandeur Hotel ballroom masked the tension simmering just beneath the surface.

Lena stood gracefully by Victor's side, her crimson gown flowing like liquid fire against the marble floors.

She could feel the heavy stares of the city’s criminal elite burning into her back as they passed.

Everyone was whispering about the lowly maid who had somehow stolen the ruthless king's heart.

Clara’s family, the powerful Petrov syndicate, was not going to let this public humiliation slide silently.

Victor leaned close to Lena, his breath warm and steady against her ear.

"Keep your eyes on the man in the silver suit standing by the ice sculpture," Victor murmured.

Lena shifted her gaze subtly, spotting a tall, broad-shouldered man glaring at them with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"That is Ivan Petrov, Clara's older brother," Victor explained without changing his pleasant expression.

"He came here tonight to deliver a message, and I guarantee it won't be a friendly one."

Lena felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach, but she absolutely refused to let her smile falter.

She squeezed Victor's arm, silently telling him that she was ready for whatever came next.

Ivan detached himself from the crowd and began walking purposefully toward their table.

The murmurs in the ballroom died down entirely as the guests anticipated the impending confrontation.

Ivan stopped two feet away, his cold blue eyes locking onto Lena with undisguised disgust.

"So this is the little rat who crawled out of the kitchen to steal my sister's crown," Ivan sneered loudly.

Victor’s posture didn't change, but the sudden, deadly stillness in his dark eyes made the surrounding guests step back in fear.

"Watch your tone, Ivan, or I will have my men remove your tongue before you leave this room," Victor warned in a dangerously low voice.

Ivan laughed harshly, though there was absolutely no humor in the sound.

"My sister is locked in your basement, Victor, and our father is demanding blood for this supreme insult."

"If you do not hand Clara over to us by midnight tomorrow, the Petrov family will tear your entire empire to the ground."

Ivan didn't wait for a response; he simply turned on his heel and strode arrogantly out of the ballroom.

The silence left in his wake was completely suffocating.

Lena looked up at Victor, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"Are we going to war?" she asked quietly, her voice trembling just a fraction.

"We are already in one," Victor replied, his eyes following Ivan's retreating figure into the shadows.

"But they severely underestimate the queen I have chosen to stand beside me."
