Chapter 5 - THE UNDERWORLD'S SHADOW

Three days passed in peaceful isolation at the estate.

Daniel spent his time playing video games in the media room, enjoying a normal childhood for once.

Lena spent her afternoons walking through the gardens with Victor.

She learned that Clara had only agreed to marry him to merge their crime families.

Leon had manipulated Clara, promising her control of Victor’s empire once he was dead.

"I trusted them," Victor confessed one evening by the fireplace.

"In my world, trust is the most expensive commodity, and I spent it on the wrong people."

Lena sat beside him on the leather sofa, watching the flames dance in his eyes.

"You trusted me," Lena pointed out quietly.

"You didn't know me, but you believed me when I stopped you from drinking."

Victor turned to face her, the distance between them shrinking.

"Your eyes didn't lie, Lena."

"When you knocked that tray away, you were terrified of me, but you were more terrified of letting a man die."

He reached out, his rough thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

Lena shivered, a sudden wave of heat rushing through her body.

She had spent her life invisible, wiping tables and changing sheets.

Now, the most dangerous man in the city was looking at her like she was the only person in the room.

The silence between them was heavy with unspoken tension.

Just as Victor leaned in, the doors to the study violently burst open.
