Chapter 3 - THE MIDNIGHT RESCUE

Lena sat on the edge of a silk-sheeted bed, staring at the clock as the minutes dragged by.
It was exactly one in the morning when the bedroom door opened.
Victor stood in the doorway, his tuxedo jacket gone, revealing a dark shoulder holster.
"Come with me," he said quietly.
Lena followed him down the long hallway to the private elevator, her heart hammering in her throat.
When the elevator doors opened in the underground parking garage, Lena gasped.
An armored black SUV was idling, and standing next to it was her younger brother, Daniel.
"Lena!" Daniel yelled, running forward and wrapping his arms around her waist.
Lena held him tight, sobbing into his shoulder as she looked up at Victor in shock.
"Where is Mama?" Lena asked frantically.
"She is already at St. Jude’s Private Hospital," Victor explained, leaning against the vehicle.
"I have placed her under the care of the city's top pulmonary specialists."
"Her medical bills are cleared, and she has a security detail outside her room."
Lena was speechless, her mind struggling to comprehend the power this man wielded.
"When my men arrived at your apartment, two of Leon’s assassins were already on your fire escape," Victor added darkly.
"Dmitri handled them, but your home is no longer safe."
Daniel looked at Victor with wide, fearful eyes, clutching Lena’s hand.

"You saved me tonight, Lena," Victor said, stepping closer to her.
"Now, it is my turn to protect you and yours."
