Chapter 13 - Board of Vultures

The glass skyscraper of Carter Holdings on Wall Street loomed under the gray Manhattan sky. The 50th-floor boardroom housed twelve stony-faced men and women—the majority shareholders who truly controlled the group's media and financial empire.

Sora took the seat at the right hand of the head of the table. Emma, wearing a sharp black suit, took the left.

"The conditions of the trust are crystal clear," the Swiss attorney stated from the head of the table. "If both heiresses do not sign the debt restructuring agreement by noon, Qatar's sovereign wealth fund will execute the guarantees and assume total control of the company."

"Let's just sign the damn thing," Sora said, scrawling her signature with dismissive elegance. "We don't have all day."

Emma picked up the fountain pen. The weight of the metal in her fingers felt like a death sentence. She knew that by signing, she officially became partners with the woman who incarnated Richard's dying wish.

Before the ink could touch the paper, the double doors of the boardroom swung wide open.

Julian Vance marched into the room. His appearance had radically changed: gone were the ragged Brooklyn clothes, replaced by an impeccable suit, though his eyes burned with a dangerous obsession. A glaring, older man in a federal badge walked by his side.

"Don't sign anything, Emma," Julian ordered, locking his eyes on Sora. "That woman isn't the legitimate heir to anything. She is the living proof of a homicide."
