Chapter 5 - Legacy of Deceit

Six months later.
Emma was living in a cramped Brooklyn apartment, working as a paralegal and using a fake last name to dodge reporters. She had cut off all contact with her parents. She believed she had left the toxic Carter bloodline behind, settling for a simple life far from the lies and betrayals.
One November afternoon, as snow began to dust the city, Emma found a thick cardboard package sitting outside her apartment door. There was no return address.
She walked into her small living room, poured herself a glass of water, and sliced through the packing tape with a pair of scissors. Inside was a portable safe, already unlocked, and a handwritten letter. Emma recognized the handwriting instantly. It was Julian's.
Emma: Your mother dumped me the second the money ran out. Your father is awaiting sentencing. You won. You destroyed the lie. But I think you're smart enough to know that in our family, no truth is absolute. I found this in a Swiss safe deposit box Victoria gave me access to before the disaster. I thought about destroying it, but considering you were the one who lit the match, I figure you deserve to see the actual ashes.
With trembling hands, Emma opened the small safe. Inside was an original birth certificate, dated twenty years ago.
Emma Carter. Mother: Victoria Carter. But on the line where Richard Carter's name should have been, another name was printed. A name Emma knew very well.
Suddenly, her cell phone buzzed on the table. Private number.
"Did you read the documents, Emma?" The voice on the other end was deep, smooth, and belonged to the man who had destroyed her family—but who now, according to the paper in her hands, shared her blood.
Emma dropped the document to the floor, feeling as if a bottomless abyss had just opened beneath her feet. "Julian?" she whispered, her voice cracking with terror.

"We have a lot to talk about, my daughter," he replied. "And trust me, what Victoria did to Richard is nothing compared to what Richard did to you."
The line stayed open, but Emma stopped listening. She stared out the window into the city's darkness, realizing with paralyzing dread that the Carter family saga hadn't ended with her mother's infidelity. It was only just beginning.
