Chapter 4 - An Empire in Ruins

The fallout was immediate, violent, and absolute. That very night, Richard threw Victoria's belongings out onto the lawn in the pouring rain. Julian tried to reason with him, but the mansion's security guards physically tossed him out onto the street. Emma watched it all from her bedroom window, feeling a mix of triumph and a devastating emptiness. She had excised the tumor, but the patient was bleeding out.
The following weeks were a media circus. The Carter divorce dominated the front pages of every financial and society magazine. Cornered and with nothing left to lose, Victoria decided she wasn't going down alone. She hired the most ruthless lawyers in New York and fired back.
In a move no one saw coming, Victoria leaked internal Carter Holdings documents to the press. Documents that Julian, in their moments of intimacy, had confessed existed. They proved that the Chicago merger had been secured through bribes to local government officials.

Emma watched her father's fury curdle into desperation. The FBI raided the Carter Holdings offices. Richard was arrested on live television. In her thirst for revenge, Victoria had destroyed the entire empire, burning the ship to ensure the captain drowned.
The Carter mansion, once a symbol of perfection, was foreclosed on. Emma found herself completely alone, packing her life into cardboard boxes. Her father was facing years in federal prison. Her mother, socially exiled and with her accounts frozen by the investigation, had fled to a miserable apartment on the outskirts of the city, accompanied by a bitter and broken Julian. The family hadn't just disintegrated; it had ceased to exist.
