Chapter 16 - Deal with the Devil

With a swift, firm stroke, Emma scrawled her signature at the bottom of the document.

"Done," Emma said, her voice like ice as she tossed the pen onto the table. "Now cancel the warrant on Victoria."

Sora smiled with profound satisfaction, picked up the signed document, and gave a subtle nod to her lawyer. He quickly typed a message on his phone.

"Done," Sora said. "Your mother is safe... for now. As for you, welcome to the board of directors of Carter Holdings, Co-President."

Julian was dragged out of the room by the guards. As they hauled him down the green-carpeted hallway, he locked eyes with Emma. There was no rage left in his gaze, only a deep, irreparable disappointment. Emma had just betrayed the only man who, despite his own misery and mistakes, had actually tried to show her the truth.

"Our first executive session is tomorrow at eight," Sora said, gathering her things. "Don't be late. We have to sell off the Chicago subsidiary before the market opens in London."

Emma was left completely alone in the massive conference room. She looked through the sweeping glass windows at the skyscrapers drowned in the New York haze. She had saved Victoria, but she felt as though she had just sold whatever was left of her soul.
