Chapter 14 - Crossfire

Whispers instantly broke out among the shareholders. Sora didn't even blink; she merely crossed her legs and looked at Julian with a smile laced with pity.
"Julian, please," Sora purred smoothly. "You've already made enough of a fool of yourself destroying your own career over my stepmother's skirt. Don't ruin what little dignity you have left."
"I have the forensic reports from Geneva from fifteen years ago," Julian yelled, slamming a file down onto the mahogany table. "My sister Helena's car didn't suffer brake failure. Someone tampered with the power steering line in the garage of Richard Carter's villa. You are the daughter of my sister's murderer!"
"And what exactly are you going to do?" Emma intervened, placing herself between Julian and the table. "Are you going to accuse a girl who was five years old when it happened? Julian, you're being manipulated again!"
"She knew everything!" Julian roared, pointing a trembling finger at Sora. "Sora has been working with Richard's lawyers from prison to take absolute control! She is using you the exact same way your father used your mother!"
"Mr. Vance, I have to ask you to leave the room or I'll be forced to arrest you for disturbing the peace," the federal agent accompanying him interjected, looking visibly uncomfortable.

Sora stood up slowly, collected the signed documents, and looked Emma dead in the eye.
"The signature is incomplete, sister," Sora said quietly. "You have ten minutes to decide if you want to be a Carter, or if you want to go back to your miserable Brooklyn apartment and wait for the cops to call you to identify your mother's body."
