Chapter 1

Domenico did not open the envelope in the ballroom.
That surprised everyone.
Marco was still half-covered by the collapsed seating-chart panels. Camilla sat among scattered wedding programs and flower petals, one hand pressed against her face.
Dozens of guests had gone silent.
Livia was crying against Domenico’s chest.
That decided his priority.
He handed the envelope to his attorney, Rachel Moretti.
“Keep this sealed.”
Camilla immediately stood.
“You can't take that.”
Domenico looked at her.
“It was under a vase in my family’s collection.”
“You don't even know what it is.”
“No.”
His voice remained quiet.
“But apparently you do.”
Camilla said nothing.
Domenico carried Livia into a private bridal suite away from the ballroom.
The little girl kept apologizing.
“I broke it.”
Domenico crouched until they were eye level.
“You broke a vase.”
Livia touched her cheek where Camilla had struck her.
“Aunt Camilla mad.”
“I know.”
“Was it expensive?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled again.
Domenico took both of her hands.
“Things cost money. You don't.”
Livia stared at him.
He repeated it.
“There is no vase in this house worth more than you.”
Only after Livia had calmed down and was safely with her nanny did Domenico return.
The wedding reception had effectively ended.
Marco had refused medical treatment beyond basic first aid.
Camilla had already called an attorney.
Rachel waited in Domenico’s private office with the envelope resting inside a clear document sleeve.
“Before you open it,” she said, “look at the outside.”
Domenico did.
The paper was yellowed.
The seal was old.
Across the front, written in black ink, were four words.
FOR DOMENICO. ONLY DOMENICO.
He recognized the handwriting immediately.
His late wife, Elena.
Domenico stopped breathing for a moment.
Elena had died eighteen months earlier after her car left a rain-slicked road outside Tarrytown.
Livia had been barely two.
Domenico touched the edge of the envelope but did not open it.
Rachel watched him.
“Do you want everyone out?”
“No.”
He looked toward the office door.
“Bring Camilla and Marco in.”
Rachel frowned.
“You think that's wise?”
“No.”
May you like
Domenico looked at Elena’s handwriting again.
“But I want to see their faces before I know what she wrote.”
