Camilla attended Livia’s fifteenth birthday lunch.
Because Livia invited her.
That mattered.
Not the foundation.
Not Domenico.

The invitation had one condition.
“No big family.”
Domenico agreed immediately.
Then invited Rachel.
Livia stared.
“Rachel is not big family.”
“She is literally your lawyer.”
“Formerly.”
Rachel laughed when she heard.
The lunch happened at a small restaurant in White Plains.
Neutral territory.
Camilla arrived alone.
No gifts except a book.
She handed it to Livia before sitting.
“You don't have to keep it.”
Livia looked at the cover.
A collection of essays about grief.
She frowned.
“Birthday book sad.”
Camilla almost laughed.
“Terrible choice.”
“Very.”
The tension broke slightly.
During lunch, conversation stayed ordinary.
School.
Music.
A teacher Livia disliked.
Then Livia asked:
“Did Mommy ever forgive you?”
Camilla put down her fork.
“I don't know.”
“You saw her last night.”
“Yes.”
“Before crash.”
“Yes.”
“Was she mad?”
“Very.”
“Did she hate you?”
Camilla looked toward the window.
“I don't think so.”
“Why?”
“Because she still called me.”
That mattered.
Elena had been angry.
Suspicious.
Afraid.
Still, when she pulled over, she called Camilla.
Not Domenico.
Not police first.
Camilla.
Livia understood something.
“Mommy trusted you some.”
Camilla's eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“And you didn't go.”
“No.”
Silence.
Then:
“Do you wish you went?”
“Every day.”
Livia looked down.
That answer could become performance if repeated too much.
Camilla seemed to know.
She continued:
“But wishing now doesn't give Elena back the help she asked for.”
Better.
Livia nodded.
Then:
“Do you want me forgive?”
Camilla took time.
“Yes.”
Honest.
Domenico, sitting two seats away, became still.
Camilla continued.
“And I know wanting that does not mean you owe it.”
Livia looked at her.
“Did Daddy forgive?”
Camilla glanced toward Domenico.
He did not answer for her.
“No.”
She said it softly.
“Does that hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Do you think unfair?”
Camilla thought.
“No.”
That surprised Livia.
“Nothing unfair?”
“I think some consequences feel painful even when they are fair.”
Good.
No request hidden inside.
After lunch, Camilla asked:
“Can I hug you?”
Livia froze.
Domenico's body reacted.
He stayed seated.
Livia thought.
Then:
“Not today.”
Camilla nodded.
“Okay.”
No face.
No sadness made visible for Livia to manage.
Good.
Three months later they met again.
At the end Livia hugged her first.
Briefly.
Camilla released when Livia did.
Domenico saw.
His chest tightened.
Then relaxed.
Livia's relationship with Camilla did not belong to him simply because his relationship with Camilla remained broken.
