The original police report described Elena’s crash as a single-vehicle accident.
Heavy rain.
Low visibility.
A sharp curve.
No evidence another vehicle struck hers.
Her blood alcohol level was below the legal limit.
There were no unexplained drugs.
No mechanical sabotage had been identified.
Domenico had accepted the findings eighteen months earlier.
He still had no evidence the crash was anything except an accident.
What changed was the timeline.
Elena left Camilla’s house at 10:14 p.m.
The crash was reported at 10:51.
The drive normally took eighteen minutes.
Where had she been for the missing nineteen?
Cell records showed Elena made three calls.
One to Camilla.
One to Marco.
One to an unidentified prepaid number.
Only the first connected.
Duration:
Three minutes, forty-six seconds.
Domenico called Camilla.
“Why did Elena call you after leaving your house?”
Silence.
“Camilla.”
“She was upset.”
“About what?”
“The argument.”
“What argument?”
Camilla exhaled.
“Elena confronted Marco during dinner.”
Marco had denied stealing.
Elena said she already had records proving otherwise.
Camilla begged her to stop discussing it.
The argument escalated.
Elena left.
“What did she say when she called you?”
Camilla’s voice became quieter.
“She said she was pulled over.”
Domenico stood.
“Where?”
“I don't remember.”
“You received the last completed call my wife made before she died.”
“It was raining. She was angry. I was angry.”
“What did she want?”
Camilla did not answer.
Domenico repeated the question.
Finally:
“She wanted me to come meet her.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Camilla started crying.
“I thought she was manipulating me.”
Domenico held the phone more tightly.
“Did you tell the police about that call?”
“No.”
The room seemed to narrow.
For eighteen months Camilla had known Elena stopped somewhere before the crash.
She had known Elena asked for help.
And she had kept it from everyone.
