Chapter 14

The final foundation meeting happened without Marco.
His attorneys had advised him not to attend.
Camilla appeared voluntarily.
Domenico sat at the opposite end of the conference table.
The independent auditors presented their findings.
Vendor manipulation.
Undisclosed related-party transactions.
False reimbursement records.
Improper transfers.
The board voted to remove Marco permanently and pursue recovery through civil channels while cooperating with law enforcement investigations already underway.
Camilla resigned from every foundation position.
She did not ask for a reduced consequence because she had eventually cooperated.
Then Domenico addressed the board.
“My wife found this before I did.”
No one moved.
“She lived in my house and still believed hiding evidence somewhere else was safer than bringing it to me.”
Several older capos looked uncomfortable.
Domenico continued.
“That part is mine.”
He described a culture where questioning senior family members felt dangerous.
Where loyalty meant silence.
Where private problems were expected to remain private even when crimes might be involved.
Marco had exploited that culture.
Camilla had hidden inside it.
Domenico had benefited from it for decades.
He announced governance changes.
Independent audits.
No family member approving a related vendor alone.
Written conflict disclosures.
No foundation records kept only inside family offices.
Some relatives thought he was overcorrecting.
Domenico did not care.
Then he addressed the wedding.
“I struck Marco.”
He paused.
“I struck Camilla.”
He did not describe himself as innocent because both had behaved terribly.
The incidents were already being handled through counsel.
He would accept whatever lawful consequences followed.
That statement irritated several men at the table.
One finally said:
“You're really going to let outsiders judge what happened inside this family?”
Domenico looked at him.
“That question is how we got here.”

Nobody answered.
For the first time, the Valenti name would not automatically close the door.
