Chapter 24

Domenico stepped down as foundation chair when Livia was twenty-four.

Nobody forced him.

That confused several relatives.

“You're healthy.”

“Yes.”

“You still have support.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Because governance worked.

Because chairmanship had become something he could leave without believing the institution would collapse.

Because Elena once hid evidence from a system organized around men nobody challenged.

The answer was all three.

He gave the short version.

“It's time.”

The independent board selected Dr. Naomi Ellis.

No Valenti relation.

Pediatric rehabilitation specialist.

Seven years of board service.

Strong audit experience.

Some relatives complained.

One said:

“The Valenti fund should have a Valenti at the top.”

Livia happened to be there.

She answered before Domenico.

“Why?”

The man stared.

Apparently nobody had prepared for the obvious question.

“It's our foundation.”

Livia looked toward the legal charter.

“No.”

Good.

Domenico almost smiled.

The fund had been created by family money.

That did not make charitable assets family property.

Another distinction their old culture had blurred.

Naomi became chair.

Domenico retained one ordinary board seat for a transition year.

Then left that too.

He disliked retirement immediately.

He called Naomi twice in the first week.

On the third call she said:

“Domenico.”

“Yes?”

“Is this an emergency?”

“No.”

“Then send the comment through the board portal.”

He stared at the phone.

Livia, across the room, heard.

“Got told no?”

“Yes.”

“Fire her?”

Domenico looked offended.

“I don't employ her.”

Exactly.

Months later Camilla requested permission to volunteer at a foundation fundraiser.

Not a leadership role.

No financial access.

Just volunteer work.

The staff ran the request through normal policy.

Background review.

Conflict check.

No special family approval.

Naomi allowed it.

Domenico learned afterward.

His anger arrived quickly.

Then he stopped.

The foundation was no longer his private extension.

That had been the point.

Livia attended the fundraiser.

Saw Camilla handing out programs.

Nothing more.

No restored title.

No family table.

No symbolic redemption.

Just work assigned by a volunteer coordinator.

Afterward Camilla asked Livia:

“Was that okay?”

Livia frowned.

“You already did.”

Camilla looked embarrassed.

Right.

Wrong question.

She tried again.

“Did my being there make you uncomfortable?”

“A little.”

“Do you want me not to next time?”

Livia thought.

“No.”

Another pause.

“Maybe ask before events I'm at.”

Specific.

Reasonable.

Camilla nodded.

“Okay.”

No demand that one permitted volunteer shift become permanent access.

That was why the relationship still existed.

Later Domenico asked Livia:

“You're comfortable with her volunteering?”

Livia looked at him.

“Mostly.”

The family word.

Still useful.

He nodded.

No argument.

His daughter was twenty-four.

The question had never been whether Domenico approved of every part of her relationship with Camilla.

The question was whether he could tolerate not owning the answer.

He was getting better.
