Chapter 11

Domenico did not go after Marco.
That surprised everyone.
He went home.
He entered Livia’s bedroom.
She was sleeping beneath a pink blanket, one small hand curled beside her face.
Domenico sat on the floor.
For the first time since Elena died, he cried without hiding it.
Not because he suddenly knew Marco killed her.
He didn't.
The truth was less clean.
An accident happened.
Then a man had an opportunity to help.
And chose himself.
Domenico had spent his life categorizing betrayal as deliberate attacks.
A knife.
A theft.
A conspiracy.
Marco’s worst betrayal had been hesitation.
Minutes spent protecting secrets while Elena asked him to call.
The next morning Domenico met Rachel.
“What happens now?”
She explained carefully.
The financial case was strong.
Marco’s conduct at the crash raised separate potential criminal issues.
Evidence destruction.
Failure to provide aid depending on applicable duties and circumstances.
Interference with evidence.
Possibly more, depending on prosecutors.
Nothing would be resolved overnight.
“And Camilla?”
“She concealed material information during the original investigation.”
Domenico looked away.
Rachel continued.
“Her legal exposure depends on exactly what she knew and what she said.”
Domenico nodded.
Then asked:
“And me?”
Rachel frowned.
“The wedding?”
“I hit both of them.”
Rachel understood.
Marco and Camilla had already raised assault complaints.
Domenico had protected Livia and the envelope.
But the force he used afterward would still be reviewed separately.
“Don't bury it,” he said.
“I wasn't planning to.”
“Good.”
Domenico had spent decades surrounded by people who believed he could make consequences disappear.
That culture had protected Marco.
It had protected Camilla.
It had convinced Elena she needed a hidden locker instead of simply walking into her husband’s office.

Domenico could not repair Elena’s trust.
He could decide what Livia grew up learning from its absence.
