Chapter 3

Locker 214 no longer existed.
That was the first problem.
Grand Central had changed storage contractors years earlier. Temporary lockers had been removed.
But Elena had anticipated that.
The old station storage records referenced in her letter belonged to a private luggage service that once operated near the terminal.
Rachel located the company’s successor.
Their archived records showed Elena had rented a long-term document box using her maiden name.
The account had never been closed.
Two days later Domenico and Rachel retrieved it from a secure warehouse in Queens.
Inside were no dramatic stacks of cash.
No weapon.
No confession.
There were invoices.
Copies of checks.
Photographs of accounting screens.
Foundation reimbursement forms.
And a small digital recorder.
Domenico recognized the organization immediately.
Elena had always built cases the same way.
Quietly.
Chronologically.
Without assumptions.
The documents involved the Valenti Children’s Rehabilitation Fund, a charity Elena had helped run.
Over two years, the fund paid nearly $2.3 million to three consulting and logistics companies.
All three appeared legitimate.
Until Rachel noticed the addresses.
Two shared a mailbox.
The third used an office owned by Marco’s cousin.
Domenico stared at the invoices.
Marco had served on the foundation’s operations committee.
Camilla chaired its annual gala.
Both could explain legitimate involvement.
Then Domenico found Elena’s handwritten notes.
M says vendors approved by D.
Domenico frowned.
“D?”
Rachel looked at him.
“You.”
Domenico searched his memory.
He had approved large foundation budgets.
Not these vendors individually.
Another note:
D says he never saw contracts.
C told staff not to send questions upstairs.
C.
Camilla.
Domenico sat back.
His wife had questioned both of them.
And someone had convinced her not to bring the questions directly to him.
Rachel pointed toward the recorder.
“Ready?”
Domenico wasn't.
He pressed play anyway.
Elena’s voice filled the warehouse office.
“October third. I asked Marco again about Blue Crest Logistics. He says Domenico approved it.”
A pause.
“I checked with Domenico’s office. He didn't.”
Another pause.
Then Elena said:
“Camilla came to see me tonight.”
The recording ended.
Domenico looked at the device.
“That's all?”
“There may be more files.”
There were.
May you like
Twenty-seven.
And the final recording was dated two days before Elena died.
