Chapter 1: The Echo of a Slap

The grand hall of the Sterling Estate fell into a deafening silence. The chandelier’s light seemed to catch on the tear sliding down Sarah’s bruised cheek. Alexander Sterling, the master of the house, stood between the trembling maid and the furious Mrs. Dawson. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and sudden, raw tension. Veneta, still clutching her grey stuffed elephant, stared defiantly at the woman in the gold dress. Alexander’s command to apologize hung in the air, but his eyes were entirely focused on the little girl and her mother. "She is only a maid!" Mrs. Dawson scoffed, her voice echoing off the marble floors. Alexander turned slowly, his sharp gaze cutting through the elite crowd. "In this house, Mrs. Dawson," Alexander’s voice was dangerously low, "we measure a person's worth by their character, not their bank account. Sarah is a member of this household. You are no longer welcome." The collective gasp from the aristocrats was audible. Alexander signaled his security, who promptly escorted a sputtering, humiliated Mrs. Dawson to the heavy oak doors.
