Chapter 6: The Golden Dress Returns
The fragile peace was shattered when Mrs. Dawson managed to secure an invitation to the annual Sterling Charity Foundation board meeting. As a major donor, she had a seat at the table. Alexander sat at the head, stone-faced, as Mrs. Dawson brought up "staffing concerns" regarding the estate's liability. "It has come to my attention," she purred, her eyes venomous, "that a certain violent child and an unstable mother are causing unrest among your elite guests, Alexander. It reflects poorly on the Foundation." Alexander leaned forward, his hands steepled. "The Foundation’s core mission is to protect the vulnerable and uplift the marginalized, Eleanor. If we cannot practice that within our own walls, our charity is nothing but hypocrisy." He shut down her motion, but Mrs. Dawson’s smirk suggested she was far from finished. She knew that to hurt a powerful man, you must strike at his heart.
