Chapter 4: Whispers in the Mansion

High society does not easily forgive a public slight. Mrs. Dawson, scorned and vindictive, began pulling strings within Alexander’s social and business circles. Rumors started to circulate that Alexander Sterling was losing his mind, prioritizing the "help" over his prestigious investors. The head housekeeper, Mrs. Higgins, warned Sarah about the brewing storm. "Keep your head down, Sarah," she advised while folding linens. "Mr. Sterling is a good man, but a man in his position cannot protect everyone forever. The wolves are circling." Sarah felt a knot tighten in her stomach. She needed this job to pay for Veneta’s schooling and their modest life. She resolved to become invisible, working the late shifts and avoiding the main halls whenever Alexander was present. She couldn't be the reason a great man lost his empire.
