Chapter 10: Veneta's Courage

While the adults navigated the crisis, little Veneta was on a mission. She knew her mommy was crying, and she knew the shiny necklace was bad. She remembered something from the day before. A man she didn't know—a man in a grey suit who smelled strongly of peppermint—had walked out of their room when she was returning from the kitchen. Veneta, clutching Barnaby, marched straight into Alexander’s towering office. "Mr. Alex," she said, her voice remarkably steady. Alexander paused his frantic pacing. "Yes, Veneta?" "A man put the shiny thing in my room. He smelled like candy." Alexander froze. He pulled up the security logs for the service entrance. "Candy? Peppermint?" he asked. He showed her a frozen frame of a catering manager from Mrs. Dawson's usual event staff. Veneta pointed a small finger at the screen. "That's him."
