Chapter 1 - The Chair at the Table

The grand dining room of the Bellucci estate was bathed in warm, cinematic light. Massive crystal chandeliers suspended from high-vaulted ceilings reflected off polished mahogany panels, silver cutlery, and pristine crystal glasses. Around the long, opulent dining table sat twelve wealthy executives, corporate lawyers, and high-level business associates, all clad in tailored tuxedos and designer evening gowns.

At the head of the table sat forty-four-year-old Damian Bellucci. Tall, broad-shouldered, and strikingly handsome, Damian was both a feared mafia boss and a powerful international shipping magnate. He had long, dark, wavy hair reaching his shoulders, a neatly trimmed beard, and intense, piercing eyes that commanded absolute obedience. He wore a fitted black suit over an open-collar black shirt, revealing dark ink tattoos creeping up his neck and across his chest—tattoos that extended down both forearms and across his broad back beneath the fine fabric. A luxury timepiece gleamed on his wrist. Cold, controlled, and intimidating to the rest of the world, he possessed a rare, quiet warmth reserved for very few.

Seated to his right was his thirty-six-year-old fiancée, Selene Vale. Elegant, sharp-featured, and impeccably styled, Selene wore a fitted black satin evening gown that clung to her figure, complemented by a glittering diamond necklace, matching earrings, and high heels. Arrogant, deeply image-conscious, and openly contemptuous toward the domestic staff, she radiated a cold superiority.

Near the service doorway, thirty-one-year-old Nora Cole stood frozen, holding a silver coffee pot with shaking hands. Nora, a maid at the estate, was pretty, visibly tired, and constantly anxious. She wore a neat black-and-white maid uniform with a clean white apron.

Slipping quietly through the staff passage behind her was her seven-year-old daughter, Lily Cole. Small and sweet, Lily possessed long, curly light-brown hair, fair rosy skin, and wide, innocent eyes. She wore a pale-pink lace party dress, white socks, and cream Mary Jane shoes. She was hungry, nervous, and polite, but possessed a quiet bravery.

Lily walked right up to the long table, stopping beside a grand, completely empty carved dining chair directly opposite Selene.

Lily clasped her tiny hands nervously in front of her pink dress, looked up at Damian, and spoke in a voice tiny, polite, and sincere:

“Mr. Bellucci… can I sit with you?”

The quiet chatter around the table instantly died. Every single guest froze, silver forks suspended in mid-air.

Selene slowly turned her head toward the seven-year-old girl. She looked Lily up and down—from her simple cream Mary Jane shoes to her curly hair—and let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the silent room like a blade. Lily’s hopeful expression faded, her shoulders slumping in embarrassment.

Nora’s heart dropped into her stomach. She immediately stepped forward, reaching for her daughter to pull her back.

Selene raised her eyebrows, her lips curling with open contempt as she delivered her response in a cold, amused, and deliberately humiliating tone:

“This table is for family, sweetheart—not the help.”

Lily lowered her head, tears brimming in her wide eyes. Nora reached her daughter, gently placing both trembling hands on Lily’s small shoulders, preparing to pull her away and apologize to the room.

Damian’s jaw tightened. The gentle light in his dark eyes vanished, replaced by an icy, dangerous storm as he looked from Lily’s untouched empty chair to his fiancée.

Without saying a word, Damian reached out with one broad, tattooed hand and abruptly pushed the heavy wooden dining chair farther out. The heavy scrape of the chair legs against the marble floor echoed through the silent room like a crack of thunder.

The guests exchanged nervous, uneasy glances. Selene’s arrogant smile instantly disappeared.

Damian looked directly at the small girl, his face calm but carrying absolute, undeniable authority. His voice came out low, protective, and final:

“Sit down, Lily. That chair is yours tonight.”

Nora covered her mouth with a pale hand, completely stunned. Selene folded her arms angrily, her chest heaving in indignation as the seven-year-old girl slowly climbed up into the grand leather chair beside Damian.

As Lily settled into the chair, her small eyes wandered across the gleaming table. She noticed a thin, black electronic access-card key partly sticking out of Selene’s open evening clutch resting beside her wine glass—the exact same distinctive silver-trimmed card Lily had seen earlier while playing near Damian’s private upstairs office.

Lily reached over, gently tugging the sleeve of Damian’s black suit jacket, and pointed her small finger toward the clutch.

Damian’s sharp eyes followed her finger.

Selene’s face tightened in sudden panic. She instantly snapped her clutch shut, covering it completely with her manicured hand.

Damian slowly turned his head toward his fiancée, his dark eyes narrowing into razor-sharp slits.

Lily leaned closer to Damian, her eyes confused, her voice soft, innocent, and completely certain as she whispered:

“She had that card when she came out of your locked room.”
