Chapter 20 - The Silent Clock

The air inside the iron foundry was thick with the suffocating stench of spilled diesel fuel and damp rust. High above on the slippery catwalk, Victoria’s face was illuminated by flashes of lightning cracking through the shattered glass roof. Her red gown was torn, soaked, and stained with dirt, her hair hanging in wild, tangled matted strands.
"Victoria! Stop!" Julian’s powerful voice echoed through the cavernous hall as he stepped out from the cover of the heavy steel machinery, walking right into the open center of the factory floor.
Victoria looked down, a twisted, feverish grin spreading across her pale lips. "Look at the big hero! Stepping out to save the day! Where is your precious little maid, Julian? Is she home tucking your bastard child into bed?"
"This isn't about Clara or Lily," Julian called up, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the steel staircase leading up to the catwalk. His gray eyes were locked onto the red flashing LED light on the detonator in her hand. "This is about you, Victoria. Your father lied to you. He used your arrogance to cover his crimes. Don't throw your life away for his sins."
Victoria hesitated for a fraction of a second, a flicker of doubt crossing her crazed eyes. "My father... my father gave me everything!"
"He gave you a lie!" Julian shouted back, taking another step up the metal stairs. "The federal prosecutors have his full confession. He blamed you for the warehouse explosion six years ago! He told them you ordered the hit!"
"No! You're lying!" Victoria shrieked, her thumb hovering dangerously over the red detonator button. "You're lying to trick me!"
"Check your phone, Victoria!" Julian urged, his voice steady despite the deadly stakes. "Look at the indictment files published ten minutes ago! He sacrificed you to save himself!"
Victoria’s hand trembled violently. With her free left hand, she pulled her cracked smartphone from her coat pocket, her eyes scanning the official court documents leaking across every news site. As she read her father's signed statement laying the blame squarely on her shoulders, the last shred of her sanity seemed to shatter.
She let out a blood-curdling scream of pure betrayal and agony. "He gave me up... HE GAVE ME UP!"
In her blind rage, Victoria swung the detonator wildly. Her foot slipped on the rain-slicked metal grating of the catwalk. She gasped, losing her balance, her body teetering over the low safety rail fifty feet above the concrete floor.
"Julian!" she screamed, reaching out instinctively toward him.
Julian lunged forward up the stairs, extending his arm at full stretch to catch her hand—
A deafening explosion rocked the lower level as a spark from an exposed electrical wire ignited a leaking diesel line. Fire erupted into the sky, blowing out the remaining windows of the foundry. Smoke swept through the catwalk in a blinding, roaring cloud.
Down on the ground, Marcus and the SWAT team were knocked off their feet by the shockwave. "Don Sterling! Get out of there! The structure is collapsing!"
Inside the blazing inferno of the upper catwalk, amidst the roaring flames and thick black smoke, two figures silhouettes clung to the slippery edge of the metal railing above the fiery abyss.
Back at the Sterling Estate, inside the warm, quiet nursery, five-year-old Lily sat up suddenly in her small bed. She looked toward the window where thunder rumbled in the distance, clutching her teddy bear tightly to her chest.
Clara rushed into the room, her face pale, holding her vibrating phone in her hand. A single text message from Marcus had just appeared on her screen: Explosion at the site. Status unknown.
Clara dropped to her knees beside Lily’s bed, holding her daughter close as tears filled her eyes.

"Mommy?" Lily whispered softly, looking out at the dark rain. "Is Uncle Julian coming home?"
Clara looked out into the stormy night, her heart pounding against her ribs, unable to answer as the silent clock on the wall ticked forward into the unknown...
