Chapter 17 - Shadows at the Gates

By late autumn, the city was blanketed in a cold, grey mist. The air was crisp with the scent of fallen leaves and rain. Despite the ongoing police manhunt for Victoria Harrington, a fragile sense of normalcy began to settle over the Sterling Estate.
Lily had begun private tutoring lessons in the estate’s sunroom, her laughter once again echoing down the marble corridors. Clara spent her days working alongside the foundation Julian had helped her establish—a charity created in her father’s memory to support families of industrial accident victims.
One evening, after Lily was fast asleep in her cozy bedroom, Julian invited Clara out to the second-story balcony overlooking the illuminated gardens. The cool night air blew softly, carrying the scent of pine. Julian wrapped a warm cashmere shawl around Clara’s shoulders, stepping up behind her and gently encircling her waist with his arms.
Clara leaned back against his solid chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. It felt natural, right, as if she had belonged in his arms all along.
"It’s peaceful tonight," Clara murmured softly, looking up at the stars peeking through the clouds.
"It is," Julian agreed, his low voice vibrating against her back. He turned her around gently so she faced him. The soft amber light from the balcony lamps cast long shadows across his handsome, sculpted features.
"Clara," Julian began, his gray eyes searching hers with profound tenderness. "When you first walked into this house as a housekeeper, I thought I knew what my future looked like. It was a cold, pre-arranged path designed to expand an empire. But when Lily sat near my table, and when you stood up to protect her... you broke open a door in my heart that I didn't even know was locked."
Clara’s heart fluttered like a trapped bird. "Julian..."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee; instead, he opened it right at eye level. Inside sat a breathtaking ring—a flawless solitaire diamond set on a delicate platinum band, surrounded by tiny sapphire accents.
"This isn't an arrangement for society or business," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "This is my heart, Clara. I love you. I love Lily. I want to spend every day of my life protecting you, honoring you, and building a true family together. Will you marry me?"
Tears of pure happiness welled up in Clara’s dark eyes, sparkling like diamonds under the moonlight. She let out a soft, joyful laugh, throwing her arms around his neck.

"Yes! Yes, Julian! I love you so much!" she cried softly.
Julian slid the ring onto her finger, pulled her close, and captured her lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their promise under the autumn sky.
