Chapter 23 - Standing Tall

The glass-and-steel boardroom on the top floor of Sterling Tower overflowed with tension. Twenty-four elite board members sat around the massive polished mahogany table, whispering anxiously among themselves. At the head of the table sat Vice Chairman Harrison Vance, wearing a smirking, triumphant expression as he checked his platinum wristwatch.

"It is ten o'clock," Vance announced loudly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Mr. Julian Sterling has failed to arrive on time. Pursuant to article four of our corporate charter, I move to initiate the vote for executive removal—"

The heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung open with a crisp, authoritative snap.

Julian Sterling stepped inside, radiating absolute power and composure. But what caused the board members to fall completely silent was the woman walking shoulder-to-shoulder beside him. Clara Brooks walked with absolute grace, holding a slim leather portfolio, her dark eyes calm and fearless.

"Save your motion, Harrison," Julian’s commanding voice boomed across the room as he took his rightful seat at the head of the table, pulling out the leather chair beside him for Clara.

Vance’s smirk faltered slightly, replaced by an annoyed scowl. "Julian, this is a private board session for shareholders. You cannot bring your household staff into executive proceedings."

"Ms. Brooks is not household staff, Harrison," Julian replied calmly, resting his hands on the table. "She is the primary whistleblower whose late father's audit ledgers uncovered the illegal offshore accounts used to short our stock. Furthermore, she represents the Thomas Brooks Memorial Trust, which acquired seven percent of Sterling voting shares at opening bell this morning."

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Vance went pale, clutching his armrest. "That's impossible! Where did she get the capital?"

Clara stood up smoothly, opening her portfolio and activating the main presentation screen behind Julian. "The capital was released from the court-ordered restitution fund seized from Harrington Industries, Mr. Vance. And according to these financial records..."

Clara tapped the touchscreen, displaying a series of flagged offshore wire transactions with Harrison Vance's digital signature highlighted in bright red. "...you colluded with Richard Harrington to manipulate our stock prices for personal gain."

Panicked chatter erupted among the board members. Several senior directors immediately stood up, glaring at Vance in disgust.

Julian leaned forward, his gray eyes locking onto the trembling Vice Chairman with lethal finality. "Security is waiting in the lobby, Harrison. You have five minutes to tender your resignation before federal agents arrest you for insider trading."

Vance slumped into his chair, his ambition turned to ash. Julian turned to the remaining board members, his voice firm and inspiring. "Now, gentlemen... let us discuss the future of Sterling Enterprises."
