Chapter 15 - The Gala of Reckoning

The ambush at the abandoned apartment building failed, thanks to Marcus’s quick tactical response and Julian’s armored vehicle. But the message was crystal clear: Richard Harrington was desperate, backed into a corner, and willing to use lethal force to protect his empire.

Instead of hiding, Julian chose to strike back in the most public arena possible: the annual Grand Metropolitan Charity Gala—an elite event attended by the city’s top politicians, judges, and corporate titans, hosted at the prestigious Imperial Hotel.

On the night of the gala, the hotel’s grand ballroom glistened with crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and hundreds of high-society guests in tuxedos and evening gowns. Richard Harrington stood near the center of the room, surrounded by influential board members, boasting about his company’s upcoming expansion, while Victoria stood by his side in a dramatic red silk gown, wearing an arrogant, triumphant smile.

Suddenly, the heavy gold doors of the ballroom swung open.

Silence fell over the room like a heavy curtain as Julian Sterling entered. He looked impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo, his posture commanding absolute respect. But it was the woman on his arm that caused a collective gasp to echo through the hall.

Elena walked beside him, radiating breathtaking elegance. She wore a stunning midnight-blue velvet gown that hugged her graceful figure, her dark hair styled in an intricate updo secured with sapphire pins. She carried herself not as a former maid, but as a queen. Behind them walked Marcus, carrying a slim leather briefcase.

Victoria’s red-lipped smile instantly twisted into a bitter sneer. She pushed through the crowd, stepping directly into Julian and Clara’s path, her voice dripping with venom.

"How dare you bring your little domestic servant into this room, Julian?" Victoria hissed loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. "Have you completely lost your mind? She doesn't belong here!"

Clara did not flinch. She looked Victoria dead in the eye, her voice calm, dignified, and crystal clear. "I belong wherever truth is welcome, Victoria. Something your family has hidden from for six years."

"You arrogant little trash—" Victoria raised her hand to slap Clara, but Julian caught her wrist in mid-air with an iron grip that made her wince in pain.

"Touch her again, Victoria, and you will spend the night in a holding cell," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy rumble.

Before Richard Harrington could step in to intervene, Julian released Victoria's wrist and gestured toward the main stage, where the event's master of ceremonies was preparing to speak. Julian walked straight up to the stage, taking the microphone from the shocked presenter.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s powerful voice boomed through the ballroom's surround-sound speakers. "Tonight, we gather to support charity and integrity. But true integrity requires exposing the shadows among us."

Julian raised his hand, and the massive LED screens behind the stage suddenly flickered to life. Instead of the charity's promotional video, high-resolution scans of the black ledger appeared—showing explicit evidence of Richard Harrington’s fraud, offshore accounts, and murder payouts.

Panicked gasps erupted throughout the ballroom. Richard Harrington went deathly pale, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering onto the marble floor.

"These documents have just been delivered to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office," Julian declared calmly into the microphone, his gray eyes locking onto Richard. "The Harrington empire is over."
