Chapter 22 - The Shadow of the Board

In the days following Victoria Harrington’s arrest, the legal battle against the Harrington estate reached its final, decisive phase. With Richard Harrington in federal custody and Victoria remanded to a high-security psychiatric medical facility pending trial, their corporate empire was systematically dismantled by federal regulators.
However, a new threat emerged from within Julian’s own kingdom.
The abrupt drop in Sterling Enterprises' stock value caused by the public scandal gave ambitious rivals on the board of directors an opportunity to strike. Vice Chairman Harrison Vance—a ruthless, aristocratic investor who had long coveted Julian’s CEO chair—called for an emergency shareholder vote to strip Julian of his executive powers, citing "unstable personal conduct and emotional liability."
Inside the estate’s private library, Julian sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing financial reports with Marcus and Clara. Clara wore a sharp cream-colored business suit, her posture commanding and confident as she analyzed the ledger spreadsheets.
"Harrison Vance secretly purchased five percent of discounted Harrington stock through foreign proxy firms last night," Clara pointed out, her slender finger tapping a column on the monitor. "He orchestrated the media leak this morning to push our stock price down further so he could force a hostile takeover during tomorrow's board vote."
Julian looked up at Clara, a mixture of deep pride and admiration shining in his gray eyes. "You spotted the transfer footprint before my chief financial officer did."
"My father taught me how to spot hidden proxy accounts when I was twelve, Julian," Clara said softly, a tender smile touching her lips. "Vance is using the same paper trail structure Richard Harrington used six years ago."
Marcus stepped forward, placing a sealed envelope on the desk. "If we present this evidence at tomorrow's meeting, we can legally disqualify Vance’s voting rights."

Julian stood up, walking around the desk and taking Clara’s hand in his. He lifted her knuckles to his lips, kissing them softly. "Tomorrow, you walk into Sterling Tower with me, Clara. Not as my assistant, but as my partner and the future director of our new corporate integrity division."
Clara looked into his steady, loving eyes, feeling the last lingering shadows of her past doubts evaporate completely. "I will be right beside you, Julian."
