Chapter 11 - THE GHOST RETURNSThe silence in the foyer was so absolute you could hear the snowflakes hitting the porch outside.

Luca lowered his weapon very slowly, his eyes locked onto the scarred face of the man standing in the doorway.

"David?" Luca whispered, the name tasting like an impossible dream. "How... how are you standing here? I buried your clothes. I gave the syndicate your signet ring."

David Vance chuckled, a dry, raspy sound that held no humor, only decades of survival. "Syndicate executioners are thorough, Luca, but they aren't omnipotent. Eleanor helped me stage the whole thing. She knew the moment the bosses found out about the offshore ledgers, they’d hunt down everyone connected to them—including you, and eventually... your family."

Emily stepped forward from behind her father, her hand resting protectively over her swollen stomach, staring at the stranger with a mixture of awe and disbelief. "You... you’re the man from Mom’s photograph."

David turned his gaze toward Emily. For a split second, his tough, weathered expression softened into something profoundly tender.

"You have your mother’s eyes, Emily," David said softly, leaning on his cane as he stepped across the threshold into the warm foyer. "And her stubbornness, too. Otherwise, you wouldn't have walked into Luca’s engagement dinner with a baby bump and a death wish."

Luca slammed the front door shut, locking it securely, before turning back to his old friend. "Explain. Everything. Now."

David walked slowly toward the living room, taking a seat by the roaring fireplace Marko had quickly stoked. Luca and Emily sat across from him, tension radiating from every inch of their bodies.

"Thirty years ago, when Eleanor found out she was pregnant with your wife—your late wife, Clara—she realized the syndicate was rotting from the inside out," David began, staring into the flickering orange flames. "Julian and Vanessa’s father, Victor Bellini, wasn't just a partner. He was the one who set the trap for me. He wanted the offshore accounts, and he wanted Eleanor’s forensic ledgers."

"Victor Bellini," Luca muttered, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. "The bastard died five years ago of a heart attack."

"Did he?" David smiled grimly. "Or did he just retire to a villa in the Swiss Alps under a new name, leaving his sociopathic children to finish the job?"

Emily gasped, pressing a hand to her mouth. "Vanessa and Julian... they didn't just want Mom’s house for real estate development. They were finishing their father’s work."

"Exactly," David nodded. "They needed the master ledger hidden in this basement to unlock the remaining Swiss bank accounts tied to the Bellini syndicate. But there’s something else. Something much bigger than money."

David reached into his deep trench coat pocket and pulled out a second, smaller micro-drive, placing it gently on the coffee table.

"What’s that?" Luca asked, leaning forward.

"A complete list of every intelligence asset, crooked politician, and federal judge currently on the Bellini payroll," David said. "Including the man who is currently running for Governor of Illinois."
