Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER IN THE ARCHIVESThree months later, the winter snow coated Chicago in a thick, glittering blanket of white, turning the sprawling metropolis into a quiet, frozen postcard.

Inside the basement vault of the Maple Street house—now converted into a secure, climate-controlled family archive room—the air smelled of old paper, leather binding, and rich mahogany.

Emily sat at a large oak desk, her six-month pregnancy now visibly a full eight months, her belly resting comfortably against the edge of the wood. She was sorting through a stack of her mother’s old photo albums when a loose photograph slipped out from between the pages of a weathered leather journal.

She picked it up.

It was an old Polaroid, taken thirty years ago. It showed a young Eleanor Moretti smiling brightly, standing beside a handsome, rugged man who wasn't Luca. Written on the back of the Polaroid in elegant, familiar handwriting were three words:

“Protect our blood.”

Emily frowned, turning the photograph over and over. She had never seen this man before in her life. He wasn't a family member. He wasn't in any of the wedding albums.

Just as she reached for her phone to call her father, the heavy security door at the top of the basement stairs clicked open.

Heavy, familiar footsteps echoed down the stone steps.

"Em?" Luca’s voice called out gently. "Are you down here in the cold? Marko said you drove over by yourself to check on the nursery delivery."

"I'm right here, Dad," Emily called back, holding the Polaroid tightly in her hand as Luca stepped into the archive room, shaking the melting snowflakes off his heavy wool overcoat.

Luca stopped walking the moment he saw the photograph in her hand.

The color instantly drained from his face—a reaction Emily had never seen from her father, not even when Julian Bellini had stormed his dining room with armed mercenaries.

"Where... where did you find that?" Luca asked, his voice dropping into a tense, breathless whisper.

Emily looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. "It fell out of Mom’s journal. Dad... who is this man?"

Luca closed his eyes for a long, agonizing moment, the shadows of the past finally catching up to the most feared man in Chicago.
