Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT DRIVE TO MAPLE STREETThe convoy of black armored SUVs tore through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago at breakneck speed. The windshield wipers slapped frantically against the glass, matching the heavy, suffocating rhythm of the tension inside the lead vehicle.

In the back seat, Luca sat in absolute silence, staring out into the neon-lit downpour. Beside him, Vanessa sat trembling, her expensive red silk gown stained with spilled coffee from her nervous hands. In the front passenger seat sat Julian, casually cleaning his fingernails with a small pocket knife while humming a tune.

"You're awfully quiet, Moretti," Julian chuckled, glancing back in the rearview mirror. "Regretting your life choices? Realizing that the great Moretti empire was built on a foundation of sand and bookkeeping errors?"

Luca didn't turn his head. "Julian."

"Hm?"

"Do you know why they call this city the Windy City?"

Julian frowned, pausing his knife. "What kind of stupid question is that? It's meteorological."

"No," Luca said quietly, his voice carrying an icy finality. "It’s because the politicians here change their stories with every shift in the air. But old foundations? Foundations are built deep. They don't move just because a storm hits."

Before Julian could process the warning, the SUV violently swerved off the main boulevard and plunged down a narrow, tree-lined residential lane.

Maple Street.

The little brick house looked hauntingly peaceful amidst the flashing red and blue lights of Marko’s advance security perimeter. Yellow police tape was already strung across the porch, and two heavy-duty industrial extraction trucks were parked on the lawn, their floodlights illuminating the shattered side of the basement wall.

"Stop the car!" Julian barked at the driver.

The vehicle skidded to a halt right in front of the white picket fence. Julian threw open the door, stepping out into the rain with his armed guards flanking him instantly.

"Clear the perimeter!" Julian yelled at the mercenaries swarming the property.

Luca stepped out calmly, adjusting his suit jacket against the chilly autumn wind. Vanessa stumbled out behind him, clutching her arms as the rain plastered her hair against her face.

"Look at this, Moretti," Julian said, gesturing proudly toward the gaping hole blasted into the side of the brick foundation. Inside, through the reinforced steel mesh, a heavy, old-fashioned chrome safe sat embedded in the concrete. "Right there. The heart of the empire."

Julian marched down the wooden ramp leading into the excavated basement pit. He pulled out a heavy electronic override device, plugging it directly into the interface port of the safe.

"Just a few lines of code," Julian muttered, his fingers flying across the keypad. "And forty years of secrets belong to the Bellinis."

He pressed enter.

A loud, electronic BEEP echoed through the basement. But instead of the safe door swinging open, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson.

“ACCESS DENIED. BIOMETRIC MISMATCH. SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED.”

Julian froze. "What? No—that’s impossible! I have the master override code!"

Luca walked slowly down the ramp, stepping into the damp, cold basement air. He stopped a few feet behind Julian, a faint, cold smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"You forgot one detail, Julian," Luca said softly.

Julian whipped around, his face twisted in panic. "What are you talking about?! I have your wife’s bloodline profile! I bought the DNA samples from her hospital records!"

"Eleanor was smarter than you, Julian," Luca said, stepping closer. "She knew her brother was a thief decades ago. She didn't use standard blood DNA for the master key."

Julian’s eyes widened in horror. "Then what did she use?"

At that exact moment, the heavy wooden cellar doors behind them slammed open with a deafening crash.

Heavy boots echoed down the stairs.

Marko stepped into the basement, holding a heavy silver briefcase. But he wasn't alone. Walking right behind him, wrapped in her warm wool coat, with her hand resting protectively over her six-month pregnant belly, was Emily.
