Chapter 9 - THE GHOST FROM THE PAST"Put that down, Em," Luca said, his voice unusually rigid as he walked slowly toward the desk.

"Dad, tell me the truth," Emily insisted, standing up carefully, holding the Polaroid out. "Mom kept this hidden in her private journal. She didn't just write 'Protect our blood.' She wrote it with a date—the exact week she went into hiding before she met you."

Luca exhaled a long, heavy breath, taking the photograph from her trembling fingers. He stared at the smiling young man in the picture as if looking at a ghost.

"His name was David Vance," Luca finally said, his voice barely audible over the hum of the basement heater. "Before I built the Moretti empire, before I became what this city feared... I was a low-level enforcer for the old Chicago syndicate. And David... David was my best friend. Like a brother."

Emily’s eyes widened. "I've never heard you mention him."

"Because he died, Em," Luca said, his gray eyes darkening with decades of buried grief. "At least, that’s what I was told. The syndicate bosses claimed he betrayed us, ran away with syndicate funds. They hunted him down." Luca looked up, meeting his daughter’s eyes. "And I was ordered to clean up the mess."

The basement seemed to grow ten degrees colder.

"You..." Emily choked out, taking an involuntary step back. "You thought you killed him?"

"I thought I carried out the sentence," Luca whispered, his hands gripping the edge of the oak desk. "Eleanor hid him in this very basement for three weeks before he disappeared. She risked her life, our lives, everything to keep him safe. That’s why she married me afterward—to give us a shield. To keep the syndicate from digging any deeper into our family."

Before Emily could process the staggering revelation, a sharp, metallic beep echoed from the upstairs hallway.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

It wasn't the security alarm. It was the emergency perimeter sensor linked to the front gate.

Marko’s voice crackled instantly over the encrypted intercom system in the corner of the room:“Boss! We’ve got an unauthorized vehicle at the gate! It’s... it’s not Julian’s men. It’s an unmarked black town car. And they’re dropping off a package.”
