Chapter 12 - THE GOVERNOR'S SHADOWThe room went dead silent.

"Governor?" Luca echoed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, glacial register. "Who are we talking about?"
"Senator Richard Sterling," David replied grimly. "The front-runner for the upcoming gubernatorial election. He was Julian’s primary financial backer. And he’s coming to Chicago tonight for a private private-donor gala."
Emily stared at the micro-drive on the table. "That’s why Vanessa was so desperate to clear out this house before anyone could look through Mom’s files. Sterling’s entire political campaign is funded by syndicate dirty money."
"And if that micro-drive goes public," David added, "Sterling’s career is over. The entire syndicate crumbles overnight."
Luca stood up slowly, walking over to the window to look out at the falling snow. The storm outside was intensifying, howling through the maple trees like a pack of wolves. But inside, Luca Moretti’s mind was no longer defensive. It was hunting.
"Marko," Luca called out without turning around.
The veteran security chief stepped out from the hallway instantly. "Boss?"
"Get the cars ready. We're going to the Grand Meridian Hotel."

Emily stood up, alarmed. "Dad! You can't go to a public gala tonight! The whole city’s elite will be there, including the media. It’s a trap!"
"It’s not a trap, Em. It’s an invitation," Luca turned around, a terrifying, confident smile touching his lips. "Julian thought he could take my house, my family, and my legacy. Now, we’re going to collect his."
