Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF SOCIETY'S ELITEThe next morning, the front page of every major newspaper in Chicago didn't feature the social event of the season. It featured something far more explosive.

“MORETTI-BELLINI ENGAGEMENT DINNER ENDS IN MASS ARRESTS: MASSIVE CORRUPTION RING EXPOSED BY DECADES-OLD LEDGER.”

Inside the master study of the Moretti mansion, the morning sun poured through the tall leaded windows, illuminating the rich mahogany desk where Luca’s coffee cup sat beside a very specific, framed photograph of Emily’s mother.

The door opened quietly.

Vanessa Bellini walked in. She was no longer wearing the red silk gown. Instead, she wore a simple, unadorned black trench coat. Her makeup was washed away, and her hair was tied back in a loose, defeated ponytail.

She looked ten years older.

"The federal marshals are waiting outside," Vanessa said, her voice barely a whisper. "Julian has been transferred to a maximum-security federal penitentiary. The entire Bellini corporate portfolio has been frozen under anti-racketeering laws."

Luca didn't look up from his paperwork. He was reviewing architectural plans for a new nursery.

"You had a choice, Vanessa," Luca said, his tone devoid of anger—which was somehow infinitely more terrifying than rage. "You could have been a mother to this family. Instead, you chose to be an accomplice to a thief."

"I loved you, Luca," Vanessa said, a bitter, broken laugh escaping her lips. "In my own twisted way... I thought if I could help Julian secure the old syndicate assets, we’d be untouchable. We’d rule this city together."

"Power isn't something you steal, Vanessa. It’s something you earn through loyalty," Luca said, finally lifting his gray eyes to look at her. "And you failed the first rule of the Moretti code."

A soft knock interrupted them.

The door pushed open, and Emily walked in, carrying a small ceramic mug of tea. She looked radiant in the morning light, her hand resting comfortably on her rounded stomach.

She stopped when she saw Vanessa standing by the door.

Vanessa lowered her gaze, unable to meet the eyes of the young woman she had tried to cast out into the rain just twelve hours earlier.

"The cab is waiting outside, Mrs. Bellini," Emily said softly, her voice calm and steady.

Vanessa swallowed hard, nodding once before turning toward the door. She paused with her hand on the brass doorknob, looking back one last time at the grand estate that had almost been hers.

"I hope... I hope the baby has your eyes, Emily," Vanessa murmured softly. Then, she pulled the door shut behind her, disappearing from their lives forever.
