Chapter 13 - THE GALA AT THE GRAND MERIDIANThe Grand Meridian Hotel was the crown jewel of downtown Chicago. Crystal chandeliers cascaded down three stories of polished marble, and hundreds of high-society donors, politicians, and corporate titans mingled in expensive tuxedos and designer evening gowns.

At the center of it all stood Senator Richard Sterling, shaking hands with flashing camera bulbs popping all around him.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the grand entrance swung open with a resounding thud.
The music cut out instantly. Conversation died in mid-sentence.
Walking through the doors wasn't a guest list invitee. It was Luca Moretti.
He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He wore his signature dark, impeccably tailored suit, flanked by Marko and six armed tactical operatives in full tactical gear. Behind him walked David Vance, leaning on his cane, and right beside Luca, holding her head high with regal grace, was Emily Moretti.
Gasps rippled through the ballroom. Whispers exploded like wildfire.
“Isn’t that Luca Moretti? What is he doing here? Who let security down?”
Senator Sterling’s face turned the color of ash. He forced a stiff, nervous smile, stepping forward through the crowd. "Mr. Moretti... what an unexpected surprise. This is a private political fundraiser—"
"Save it, Richard," Luca’s voice boomed across the vast ballroom, amplified by the hall's acoustics without him even raising his tone.
Luca walked straight up to the podium, ignoring the secret service agents who instinctively reached for their holsters before Marko’s men clicked their rifle safeties off in unison.
"You have no jurisdiction here, Moretti!" Sterling stammered, stepping back. "I am running for Governor of this state!"
"And you've been running on stolen money," Emily’s voice rang out clearly as she stepped up beside her father, holding up the silver micro-drive for the entire room to see.
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters whipped out their phones, live-streaming the confrontation to millions across the country.
"This micro-drive," Emily continued, her voice steady and powerful, "contains every financial wire transfer between the Bellini syndicate and your campaign office, Senator. Including the payoffs for the Maple Street zoning cover-up."
Sterling lunged forward, desperate to snatch the drive. "Lies! Slander! Arrest them!"

Before the senator’s security could move, Luca stepped forward with lightning speed, grabbing Sterling by the lapels of his expensive suit and lifting him slightly off the polished marble floor.
"You tried to burn my daughter’s house down, Richard," Luca whispered, his gray eyes burning with righteous fury. "You tried to steal my grandchild’s future. And in this city... that’s the one bill that always comes due."
