Chapter 2 - THE WOLF AT THE THRESHOLD"Julian," Vanessa breathed, a flicker of frantic hope crossing her face. "Thank God. Tell Luca this is all a misunderstanding—"

"Shut up, Sis. You're ruining the aesthetic," Julian said smoothly, stepping past the frozen guests without a single glance in their direction. His eyes were fixed entirely on Luca Moretti, glittering with a dangerous, long-simmering ambition.

Julian stopped twenty feet away, hands tucked neatly into his trouser pockets.

"Moretti. I hear congratulations are in order," Julian purred, his tone dripping with mock politeness. "An engagement. A grand wedding. And, apparently... a new addition to the nursery. Though looking at the state of things, it seems my sister’s choice of real estate management leaves a bit to be desired."

Luca didn't move. He kept Emily safely tucked against his side, his left hand sliding imperceptibly down to the holster hidden beneath his custom jacket.

"You sent men to my daughter's house, Julian," Luca said, his voice dropping into that dark, hypnotic register that made hardened killers drop their weapons.

"Your daughter's house?" Julian tilted his head, feigning innocence. "Oh, you mean the quaint little brick box on Maple Street? The one registered under a shell corporation linked to a Cayman Islands blind trust?" Julian chuckled softly. "Come on, Luca. You're a brilliant strategist, but sentimentality makes you blind. That property sits on a multi-acre zoning corridor that the city council is about to rezone for the downtown commercial expansion project. Valued at eighty million dollars."

Emily gasped, clutching the little white GRANDPA LUCA onesie to her chest like a shield. "Mom’s house... worth eighty million?"

"Not the house, sweetie," Julian corrected, flashing a shark-like grin. "The land underneath it. And more importantly... what’s buried beneath the foundation."

Luca’s eyes flashed. "What did you say?"

"You heard me," Julian stepped closer, his armed guards fanning out slightly, cutting off the exits to the main terrace. "Eleanor Moretti—rest her sweet, saintly soul—wasn't just a housewife who loved gardening. Before she married you, Luca, she was the chief forensic accountant for the old Chicago syndicate. She kept ledgers. Every offshore account, every payoff, every dirty name of every judge and politician currently sitting in this room."

A collective wave of panic rippled through the thirty elite guests. Whispers erupted like a nest of disturbed vipers. Several prominent city officials instantly looked like they were about to throw up their lobster dinner.

"Lies," a trembling city councilman shouted from the middle of the table. "That’s a fabrication!"

"Is it?" Julian didn't even look at the councilman. His eyes remained locked on Luca. "Eleanor knew she was dying seven years ago. She didn't trust you to protect our family’s interests, Moretti. She hid her master ledger in a tamper-proof, biometric safe built directly into the concrete floor of the basement of that Maple Street house. And she left the key..." Julian’s eyes flicked to Emily "...with her precious, naive granddaughter."

Luca stared at Julian, a cold realization washing over him. This entire engagement—two years of dating Vanessa, infiltrating his inner circle, smoothing over syndicate tensions—wasn't about love, status, or merging empires.

It was a hostile takeover.

"You used your sister," Luca said softly, his chest heaving with suppressed fury as he looked at Vanessa. "You positioned her to get close to me so you could legally clear titles, access the properties, and hunt down Eleanor’s archive."

Vanessa couldn't even meet his eyes. She stared at the marble floor, her lower lip trembling. "He... he said it was the only way our families would truly be united..."

"You sold your soul for a discount-rate corporate merger," Luca spat.

May you like

Julian pulled a sleek silver remote out of his coat pocket. A tiny red LED light blinked rhythmically on its surface.

"You can keep the house, Luca. You can keep the girl, and the grandbaby," Julian said, his smile turning feral as he pressed his thumb against the remote. "All I want is the ledger. And my men have already breached the basement wall."
