Chapter 10 – The Truth Sophia Had Waited Fifteen Years to Tell

Ethan slowly pushed the archive door open.

There was no point hiding anymore.

Sophia stood at the center of the room, perfectly composed, while Harold shifted uneasily beside her. Unlike Harold, she showed no surprise.

"I was wondering how long it would take," she said.

Nathan stepped forward, anger flashing across his face.

"You manipulated my marriage."

Sophia met his eyes.

"Yes."

"You paid Vanessa to fake a pregnancy."

"Yes."

"You nearly destroyed Claire."

For the first time, Sophia's confidence faltered.

"I never intended for Claire to suffer."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"But she did."

Ethan held up his phone.

"I recorded everything."

Sophia didn't even glance at it.

"Then you've recorded only half the story."

She reached into her briefcase and placed a thick manila envelope on the table.

"I've waited fifteen years for someone to ask the right questions."

Nathan folded his arms.

"Start talking."

Sophia took a slow breath.

"Your father didn't steal my inheritance."

The room fell silent.

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

"He sacrificed it."

Nathan looked confused.

"That doesn't make any sense."

"It will."

Sophia slid several faded documents across the table.

Among them was a confidential audit from fifteen years earlier.

At the top, stamped in red:

INTERNAL – DO NOT DISTRIBUTE

Ethan scanned the first page.

His expression changed instantly.

Whitmore Holdings had been on the verge of bankruptcy.

Not because of poor management—

Because someone inside the company had secretly embezzled nearly $800 million over seven years.

Nathan looked at Harold.

"You?"

Harold lowered his head.

"Not alone."

Sophia continued.

"The board wanted a public investigation."

"But exposing the theft would've destroyed the company," Ethan realized.

She nodded.

"Your father made an impossible choice."

Richard had accepted responsibility for financial decisions he hadn't made.

He negotiated private settlements.

Sold family assets.

Allowed the world to believe he had cheated his own sister.

In return, the criminal investigation was quietly buried, saving Whitmore Holdings from immediate collapse and protecting more than twenty thousand employees.

Nathan stared at the papers.

"So... Dad became the villain on purpose."

Sophia's voice softened.

"He asked me to hate him."

Nathan's hands trembled.

"Then why fake the pregnancy now?"

Sophia looked directly at Ethan.

"Because the real thief came back."

Silence.

She turned toward Harold.

"He threatened to expose everything unless Richard surrendered control of the company."

Harold nodded reluctantly.

"I was forced to cooperate."

"You lied to us."

"I was trying to keep everyone alive."

Ethan frowned.

"If Harold wasn't the mastermind..."

Sophia finished the sentence.

"...then you've been looking at the wrong person this entire time."

She reached into the envelope and removed one final photograph.

It had been taken only three weeks earlier.

A man stepping off a private jet.

Nathan recognized him immediately.

His breath caught.

"No..."

The man smiling beside the aircraft wasn't a stranger.

He wasn't a rival executive.

He wasn't even an outsider.

It was Michael Reynolds

Claire's older brother.

The respected federal prosecutor who had spent his entire career fighting financial crime.

The man Nathan trusted more than almost anyone.

Sophia looked at the brothers with quiet sadness.
