Chapter 4 – The Doctor Who Never Existed

Ethan barely waited until sunrise.
The photograph Olivia had captured played over and over in his mind. Vanessa's hand hadn't rested on her stomach the way an expectant mother might. She had adjusted something with practiced precision, almost as if tightening a belt hidden beneath her dress.
If she was wearing a prosthetic, someone had helped her build the lie.
The question was who.
Nathan arrived at Ethan's apartment looking like he hadn't slept in days.
"I need the truth," he said quietly. "No matter how ugly it is."
Ethan nodded.
"Then we start with her doctor."
Vanessa had repeatedly claimed she was seeing a renowned obstetrician named Dr. Melissa Carter at an exclusive women's clinic that valued patient privacy above everything else.
Nathan had never questioned it.
He had been too ashamed to insist on attending appointments.
Ethan drove to the address Vanessa had listed on one of the appointment cards.
The building existed.
The clinic did not.
Instead, the first floor housed a dental practice. The second floor contained a law office. The third floor was under renovation, surrounded by yellow caution tape.
Nathan stared at the directory.
"There has to be a mistake."
"There isn't," Ethan replied.
They entered the lobby.
An elderly security guard looked up from his newspaper.
"Can I help you?"
Ethan showed him the appointment card.
"I'm looking for Dr. Melissa Carter."
The guard adjusted his glasses before chuckling.
"Son, I've worked in this building for eleven years."
He handed the card back.
"There has never been a doctor by that name here."
Nathan's face drained of color.
Outside, Olivia was already waiting.
"I checked every medical licensing database in Illinois."
"And?"
"No licensed obstetrician named Melissa Carter matches Vanessa's story."
Nathan closed his eyes.
"So... the doctor never existed."
Olivia nodded.
"The appointment cards are fake."
They decided to keep digging.
Using one of the appointment reminders Vanessa had accidentally left visible in a photograph online, Olivia traced the phone number printed at the bottom.
It wasn't registered to a clinic.
It belonged to a prepaid cellphone purchased three months earlier.
Every call placed to that number lasted less than two minutes.
Every incoming call came from Vanessa herself.
Nathan frowned.
"She called her own fake clinic?"
Olivia nodded.
"So it looked convincing if anyone checked the call history."
Nathan leaned against the car, struggling to breathe.
The deception wasn't impulsive.
It had been carefully engineered.
Every document.
Every text message.
Every excuse.
Every fake appointment.
Months of planning.
That evening, Ethan sat alone in his office reviewing everything they had collected.
The fake doctor.
The prosthetic supplier.
The shifting belly.
The adhesive-covered safety pin.
None of it explained one thing.
Why?
Vanessa already had access to Nathan's life.
His trust.
His money.
His family's sympathy.
Why invent a pregnancy?
Just then, Olivia called.
"I found a financial transfer."
Ethan straightened.
"From who?"
"Not who."
A pause.
"To whom."
"Vanessa received two million dollars from an offshore account six weeks before announcing the pregnancy."
Ethan's heartbeat quickened.
"Who owns the account?"
Olivia's voice turned serious.
"That's the problem."
"It doesn't belong to Vanessa."
"It belongs to someone inside the Whitmore family."
Silence filled the room.
This wasn't just a fake pregnancy anymore.
Someone close to Nathan had paid for the lie.
And Ethan suddenly realized...
May you like
The biggest betrayal might not be Vanessa's.
It might be waiting inside his own family.
