Chapter 9 – The Woman Everyone Forgot

Nathan pressed his back against the cold concrete wall, struggling to steady his breathing.
"Sophia..."
He hadn't spoken his aunt's name in years.
As children, he and Ethan had adored her. She was adventurous, funny, and fearless—the complete opposite of their strict father. Then, almost overnight, she vanished from family gatherings.
Whenever they asked where she had gone, Richard gave the same answer.
"She chose her own path."
Now Ethan realized that wasn't the whole truth.
Inside the archive room, Harold spoke first.
"The brothers are getting suspicious."
Sophia remained remarkably calm.
"They're too late."
Harold lowered his voice.
"Ethan is asking questions. He's been following Vanessa."
"I expected that."
"And Richard opened the succession files."
Sophia smiled.
"Good."
Harold looked confused.
"You wanted him to?"
"Of course."
Nathan exchanged a puzzled glance with Ethan.
None of this sounded like someone trying to hide.
It sounded like someone setting a trap.
Ethan carefully lifted his phone and began recording through the narrow gap in the door.
Sophia stepped into view.
She looked almost exactly as Nathan remembered—elegant, silver-haired, impeccably dressed.
Only her eyes had changed.
They were colder now.
Harder.
She placed a folder on the table.
"The divorce papers."
Harold nodded.
"Nathan hasn't signed them."
"He will."
"And Claire?"
Sophia smiled again.
"Claire has already reached her breaking point."
Nathan's stomach twisted.
"So this was never about the baby," he whispered.
Ethan nodded.
"It was about destroying your marriage."
Sophia continued.
"Once the divorce is finalized, the succession clause activates."
Harold frowned.
"What if Ethan proves the pregnancy is fake before then?"
"He won't."
"You're certain?"
Sophia looked toward the window.
"People don't question the victim."
"What do you mean?"
"Vanessa was only ever a distraction."
Nathan's pulse quickened.
If Vanessa wasn't the true weapon...
Then who was?
Suddenly Ethan's phone vibrated.
A message from Olivia.
URGENT. DON'T CONFRONT THEM. CHECK THE FILE I JUST SENT.
He opened the attachment.
It was a scanned copy of court records from fifteen years earlier.
The case involved Whitmore Holdings.
Plaintiff:
Sophia Whitmore.
Defendant:
Richard Whitmore.
Reason:
Fraud.
Breach of fiduciary duty.
Forgery.
Nathan frowned.
"My father forged documents?"
Ethan kept reading.
The lawsuit had been dismissed before trial.
Not because Sophia lost.
Because she withdrew the case.
Then he noticed a handwritten note attached to the settlement agreement.
"Evidence secured. Not destroyed."
Ethan looked back through the doorway.
Sophia wasn't trying to steal the company.
She was trying to force Richard into revealing something he had buried for fifteen years.
Vanessa's fake pregnancy...
The offshore money...
The staged affair...
They were all pieces of a much larger game.
Before Ethan could process another thought, his elbow brushed against a metal shelf.
Clang!
The sound echoed through the archive.
Inside the room, Harold froze.
Sophia slowly turned toward the door.
Silence.
Then she spoke in a calm, unmistakable voice.
"You can come out now, Ethan."
Nathan's blood ran cold.
She hadn't guessed.
She had known they were there all along.
And the trap...
May you like
Had never been for Richard.
It had been for them.
