Chapter 12 – Operation Legacy

Nathan ignored every red light on the way to Michael Reynolds' house.

The city blurred past the windshield.

Beside him, Ethan kept calling Claire.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Voicemail.

Olivia sat in the back seat, reviewing everything they had uncovered.

"The security system at Michael's house is connected to a private monitoring company," she said. "If he's trying to erase evidence, we won't have much time."

Nathan tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"I'm not losing Claire."

Ten minutes later, they pulled into Michael's quiet suburban neighborhood.

The front door stood half open.

A lamp had been knocked over on the porch.

Nathan's heart pounded.

"Claire!"

No answer.

They rushed inside.

The living room was in chaos.

Books lay scattered across the floor.

A coffee table had been overturned.

Broken glass glittered beneath the lights.

It looked less like a burglary...

And more like someone searching for a single object.

"Upstairs!" Ethan shouted.

They split up.

Nathan ran toward the master bedroom while Ethan searched Michael's home office.

Olivia stayed downstairs, photographing everything before it could be disturbed.

Nathan found Claire in the bedroom.

She was sitting against the wall, her wrists tied with plastic zip ties.

A bruise darkened the side of her face.

"Claire!"

He dropped to his knees and cut the restraints with a pocketknife.

She threw her arms around him.

"I thought you weren't coming."

"I'm here."

Nathan held her tightly, unable to let go.

"I'm so sorry."

Claire closed her eyes.

"We'll talk later."

She reached into her jacket.

"I kept it."

She pulled out a thin black flash drive.

"He couldn't find this."

Downstairs, Ethan had made an even bigger discovery.

Michael's office contained an industrial paper shredder.

Still warm.

He looked inside.

Thousands of tiny strips of paper.

Recently destroyed.

On the desk sat a laptop.

The screen displayed a message.

REMOTE WIPE IN PROGRESS

"Damn it."

Ethan disconnected the power cable.

Too late.

Every file vanished before his eyes.

Olivia called from the garage.

"You need to see this."

Parked inside was a black SUV.

The trunk was partially open.

Inside were three large storage boxes.

Each labeled with the same words.

WHITMORE HOLDINGS – CONFIDENTIAL

Ethan lifted the lid.

His expression froze.

The boxes weren't filled with money.

They weren't filled with contracts.

They contained hundreds of surveillance files.

Photographs.

Phone records.

GPS logs.

Private emails.

Every member of the Whitmore family had been monitored for years.

Nathan flipped through one folder.

His own name appeared on the cover.

Another read:

Claire Whitmore

Another:

Richard Whitmore

Another:

Ethan Whitmore

Michael hadn't just been manipulating the family.

He had been studying them.

Claire slowly walked into the garage.

"I read one file before he caught me."

Nathan looked at her.

"What did it say?"

She swallowed hard.

"It said Operation Legacy wasn't created to steal the company."

Everyone fell silent.

"It was created..."

"...to identify the one person who still possessed the original evidence from fifteen years ago."

Sophia's words suddenly echoed in Ethan's mind.

"The real thief came back."

This had never been about money alone.

Someone had spent fifteen years hunting a single piece of evidence.

A document powerful enough to destroy careers...

And send someone to prison forever.

Just then, Olivia's phone buzzed.

She stared at the screen in disbelief.

"It's Richard."

Ethan answered immediately.

His father's voice was calm.

Too calm.

"They took Harold."

"What?"

"They kidnapped him."

Nathan frowned.

"Who?"

Richard's answer chilled everyone.

"The people Harold was afraid of."

A long pause followed.

Then Richard whispered six words that changed everything.

"They know you found the evidence."
