Chapter 5 – The Money Trail

The silence in Ethan's office felt heavier than concrete.
Nathan stared at Olivia's laptop, unable to process the number glowing on the screen.
$2,000,000.
Transferred six weeks before Vanessa announced her pregnancy.
"This has to be fake," Nathan whispered.
Olivia shook her head.
"I verified it through three independent financial records. The money is real."
Ethan folded his arms.
"But the sender isn't."
"What do you mean?"
"The account is hidden behind two shell corporations in the Cayman Islands. Someone went to extraordinary lengths to conceal the owner's identity."
Nathan sank into his chair.
"So we're back to nothing."
"Not exactly."
Olivia enlarged another document.
"The transfer was authorized from a private banking terminal that only a handful of Whitmore executives are allowed to access."
Nathan looked up.
"Our family office."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Which means whoever funded Vanessa either works for the Whitmores... or is a Whitmore."
The next morning, Ethan paid an unexpected visit to the company's Chief Financial Officer, Harold Simmons.
Harold had managed the Whitmore family's finances for nearly thirty years.
He knew every trust.
Every investment.
Every hidden account.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Ethan slid a printed transaction across the desk.
Harold's smile disappeared.
"Where did you get this?"
"So you recognize it."
Harold hesitated.
"I recognize the authorization code."
Ethan leaned forward.
"Who used it?"
"I'm not allowed to discuss confidential accounts."
"This isn't about business anymore."
Harold remained silent.
Then he quietly stood, closed the office door, and lowered the blinds.
"There are things," he said carefully, "that wealthy families prefer never become public."
Nathan felt his stomach tighten.
"What things?"
Harold looked directly at Ethan.
"Power struggles."
Harold opened an encrypted file.
A family trust chart appeared.
The Whitmore fortune was worth nearly four billion dollars.
If Nathan remained married to Claire without children, much of his inheritance would remain locked inside the trust.
But if he fathered a child outside the marriage...
The structure changed dramatically.
Several clauses activated.
Ownership shifted.
Voting rights moved.
Certain family members gained immediate financial advantages.
Nathan stared at the document.
"I've never seen this."
"You weren't supposed to."
Ethan's voice hardened.
"So someone benefits if Nathan believes Vanessa is carrying his baby."
Harold nodded once.
"Yes."
"And someone paid Vanessa two million dollars to make sure he believed it."
Harold didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
That afternoon, Ethan searched through decades of trust amendments.
One clause caught his attention.
It had been added only eight months earlier.
Approved by...
His father.
Richard Whitmore.
Nathan frowned.
"Dad changed the trust?"
"Without telling either of us."
The room fell silent.
Richard had always preached honesty, family, and legacy.
But now, hidden legal documents suggested he had quietly rewritten the rules before Vanessa ever appeared.
Too many coincidences were becoming impossible to ignore.
As Ethan prepared to leave the office, Harold spoke one final sentence.
"You boys should be careful."
Ethan turned.
Harold's expression had changed from professional to frightened.
"If someone is willing to spend two million dollars creating a fake heir..."
He paused.
"...they won't hesitate to destroy anyone who uncovers the truth."
Nathan and Ethan exchanged a long glance.
For the first time, neither of them was thinking about Vanessa.
They were thinking about their father.
May you like
And wondering whether the man who had raised them...
...had been manipulating them all along.
