Chapter 7 – The Signature That Didn't Belong

Nathan couldn't breathe.

He stared at the contract as if the letters might rearrange themselves into something that made sense.

Claire's signature was unmistakable.

Elegant.

Deliberate.

The same signature she used on holiday cards, legal documents, and every anniversary note she had ever written to him.

"No..." Nathan whispered. "She wouldn't."

Ethan didn't respond.

Instead, he read the document again from beginning to end.

The contract promised Vanessa five million dollars upon the "successful completion of the agreement," but one sentence caught his attention.

This document becomes enforceable only after authorization by the principal.

"There’s something wrong," Ethan murmured.

Nathan looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"This isn't a payment contract."

He pointed to the signature page.

"It's missing the principal's signature."

Nathan frowned.

"So?"

"So Claire's name is listed as a witness."

Silence.

Nathan blinked several times before taking the document back.

Ethan was right.

The page had been folded in a way that hid the title above the signature lines.

Claire hadn't signed as the person hiring Vanessa.

She had signed as a witness.

Someone had deliberately folded the document to make it appear otherwise.

Just then, footsteps echoed in the hallway.

The brothers exchanged alarmed glances.

Someone was coming.

Ethan quickly returned the files to the safe, leaving only enough time to photograph each page with his phone.

The study door opened.

Richard Whitmore stood there.

His expression hardened immediately.

"What are you doing in my office?"

Nathan's mouth went dry.

Neither brother answered.

Richard's eyes drifted to the slightly open safe.

For the first time in years, his calm demeanor cracked.

"You opened it."

It wasn't a question.

It was an accusation.

Richard quietly closed the office door behind him.

"I suppose you've seen the file."

Ethan crossed his arms.

"We've seen enough to know someone is paying Vanessa."

Richard sighed deeply and walked toward the window.

"When you've spent forty years protecting a family empire, you learn one lesson."

He turned slowly.

"Sometimes the truth destroys more lives than the lie."

Nathan stepped forward.

"Did you pay her?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he asked a different question.

"Do you know what happens if Whitmore Holdings loses control of the family trust?"

Ethan frowned.

"What does that have to do with Vanessa?"

"Everything."

Richard opened another drawer and removed a faded folder.

Across the front were the words:

Emergency Succession Plan

Inside were legal documents showing that if Nathan divorced Claire without a direct heir, a controlling block of company shares would automatically pass to an outside investment group.

Nathan's face paled.

"They could take the company?"

Richard nodded.

"Thousands of employees would lose their jobs."

"So you created a fake pregnancy?"

"I created time."

The room fell silent.

Richard continued.

"I never hired Vanessa."

Nathan looked confused.

"Then who did?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"I've been trying to find that out myself."

He slid one final photograph across the desk.

It showed Vanessa meeting a man in a black suit outside a downtown hotel three months earlier.

The man's face was partially hidden.

But Ethan recognized the watch on his wrist.

It belonged to only one person.

Whitmore Holdings' Chief Financial Officer.

Harold Simmons.
