Chapter 8 – The Man Behind the Money

Nathan grabbed the photograph with trembling hands.
"Harold?"
He looked from the picture to his father, hoping someone would laugh and call it a misunderstanding.
No one did.
Richard leaned against his desk, his face weary.
"I hired Harold thirty-two years ago," he said quietly. "I trusted him with every confidential account this family has."
"And now you think he's behind this?" Ethan asked.
"I think he's hiding something."
Richard opened another folder.
"For the past six months, several transactions have disappeared before they reached our internal audit. Small amounts at first. Then larger ones."
Nathan frowned.
"Why didn't you fire him?"
"Because I couldn't prove it."
"And if Harold realized you were investigating..."
Richard nodded.
"...he would destroy the evidence."
Ethan spread Olivia's photographs across the desk.
The fake clinic.
The prosthetic supplier.
The altered pregnancy bump.
The offshore transfer.
"They all connect to Harold," Ethan said.
"But we're still missing one thing."
Nathan looked up.
"Motive."
Richard answered without hesitation.
"Control."
The next morning, Olivia called with unexpected news.
"I found Vanessa."
"Where?"
"She checked into the Grand Monarch Hotel under a different name."
"Is she alone?"
"No."
Olivia's voice dropped.
"Harold just walked into her suite."
Within twenty minutes, Ethan and Nathan were parked across the street from the hotel.
Olivia sat inside a news van with a camera fitted with a powerful telephoto lens.
Room 1817.
The curtains were slightly open.
Inside, Harold paced nervously while Vanessa removed her heels.
Then, without hesitation, she reached beneath her dress.
Nathan's breath caught.
She unclipped a hidden belt.
A realistic silicone pregnancy bump slipped into her hands.
Harold took it from her and placed it carefully inside a black carrying case.
There was no baby.
There never had been.
Olivia captured everything.
Frame after frame.
Every second.
Every lie.
Nathan felt sick.
Weeks of guilt.
Months of watching Claire suffer.
His entire marriage had nearly collapsed because of the object now sitting inside Harold's briefcase.
Then something unexpected happened.
Harold handed Vanessa a thick envelope.
She opened it.
Stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
At least fifty thousand dollars.
Vanessa smiled.
Harold didn't.
Instead, he pointed a finger inches from her face.
Even through the window, his anger was obvious.
Olivia zoomed in on his lips.
Later, reviewing the footage frame by frame, they could clearly read four words.
"Stick to the plan."
Nathan looked at Ethan.
"What plan?"
No one had an answer.
As Harold left the hotel, Ethan made a decision.
"Follow him."
Nathan started the engine.
Harold's black sedan drove through downtown Chicago before entering the underground garage of Whitmore Holdings.
But instead of parking near the executive elevators...
He walked into the records archive.
A section that hadn't been used in years.
Ethan and Nathan waited five minutes before quietly slipping inside.
The archive was dark.
Dust covered shelves filled with decades of financial records.
At the very back, a faint light glowed beneath a half-closed door.
Harold was speaking to someone.
They couldn't see the person's face.
Only hear a single sentence.
"It's almost over."
Then came the reply.
A woman's voice.
Cold.
Calm.
Confident.
"You've done exactly what I hired you to do."
Nathan's heart stopped.
He knew that voice.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It wasn't his mother.
And it certainly wasn't Claire.
It belonged to Sophia Whitmore—
their aunt, the estranged sister who had disappeared from the family business fifteen years earlier after losing a bitter inheritance battle.
