Chapter 13 – The Missing Ledger

Nathan looked at Ethan, then at Claire.

No one spoke.

Richard's final words echoed through the silence.

"They know you found the evidence."

"But we didn't," Nathan said.

Richard's voice remained steady.

"They think you did."

"What evidence are they talking about?"

"The ledger."

Ethan frowned.

"What ledger?"

"The original financial ledger from fifteen years ago. The only document that identifies every executive involved in the theft."

Nathan felt a chill run down his spine.

"So Harold doesn't have it?"

"No."

"Sophia?"

"No."

"You?"

A long pause.

"I destroyed my copy years ago."

Back at the Whitmore estate, Richard gathered everyone in his private study.

Sophia stood by the fireplace.

Claire sat beside Nathan, still shaken but refusing to let go of his hand.

For the first time in weeks, Nathan didn't pull away.

Richard unfolded an old blueprint of the Whitmore headquarters.

"The original ledger disappeared the night of the settlement."

Ethan studied the blueprint.

"You searched for it?"

"For fifteen years."

"And never found it?"

Richard nodded.

"Because I was searching in the wrong place."

Sophia stepped forward.

"I finally remembered something last week."

She pointed to a section of the blueprint.

"The old executive library."

"It was demolished."

"So everyone believed."

She smiled faintly.

"It wasn't demolished."

"It was sealed."

The hidden room had been forgotten during a major renovation.

Only four people had ever known it existed.

Richard.

Sophia.

Harold.

And the company's founder.

"If the ledger survived," Richard said, "it's still there."

Nathan grabbed his coat.

"Then let's go."

Just after midnight, the family entered Whitmore Holdings through a private underground entrance.

The building was dark.

Only emergency lights illuminated the empty hallways.

Richard led them to an old paneled wall behind the executive library.

He pressed against the wood.

Nothing.

Sophia reached into her purse.

"I kept this."

She held up a tarnished brass key.

"The last copy."

The hidden lock clicked open.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Dust covered every surface below.

The forgotten room looked untouched for decades.

Shelves lined the walls.

Old ledgers.

Company charters.

Boxes of handwritten records.

Ethan swept his flashlight across the room.

"There."

A small iron safe.

Richard entered a six-digit combination.

Nothing.

Sophia tried another.

Still nothing.

Nathan sighed.

"We're too late."

Claire quietly stepped closer.

"What if it isn't a company code?"

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the safe's engraved initials.

E.W.

"Elias Whitmore," she said.

"The founder."

Richard frowned.

"So?"

Claire smiled.

"He named the company after the day his daughter was born."

Richard's eyes widened.

"I remember..."

He entered the date.

Click.

The safe opened.

Inside rested a single leather-bound ledger.

Untouched.

Covered in dust.

Richard carefully lifted it.

"The original..."

Ethan opened the first page.

Every illegal transfer.

Every secret payment.

Every forged signature.

Every participant.

Then they reached the final page.

Nathan froze.

"No..."

Richard slowly lowered the book.

The final signature belonged to exactly the person no one expected.

Not Harold.

Not Sophia.

Not Michael.

Not even Richard.

It was signed by...

Margaret Whitmore.

Nathan's mother.

The quiet woman who had spent fifteen years pretending she knew nothing.

The woman who had cried over the family falling apart.

The woman everyone believed was completely innocent.

Sophia closed her eyes.

"I prayed I was wrong."

Richard looked utterly broken.

"My own wife..."

Before anyone could speak again—

The lights went out.

A red laser dot appeared on Richard's chest.

Then another.

Then five more.

May you like

Someone had been waiting for them.

And they weren't leaving the hidden room without a fight.
