Chapter 6 – The Locked Study

Nathan refused to believe it.
"No."
He pushed Harold's documents across the table.
"My father can be controlling. He can be stubborn. But he wouldn't destroy my marriage."
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
He wished he could agree.
Instead, he remembered every odd conversation Richard Whitmore had started over the past few months.
"Family legacy matters more than feelings."
"Sometimes sacrifices are necessary."
"Business comes before emotion."
At the time, they had sounded like ordinary lectures.
Now they felt like warnings.
That evening, the Whitmore family gathered for dinner at the estate.
The atmosphere was painfully normal.
Richard discussed stock prices.
Their mother asked about an upcoming charity gala.
Vanessa smiled politely, one hand resting on her perfectly rounded stomach.
Claire sat quietly across the table, barely touching her food.
Nathan couldn't even look at her.
The guilt still lingered, despite everything Ethan had uncovered.
Halfway through dinner, Richard excused himself.
"I need to take a call."
He disappeared down the hallway toward his private study.
Ethan noticed something.
Vanessa glanced at Richard's empty chair...
Then subtly checked the time on her watch.
Almost as if they were following the same schedule.
Twenty minutes later, Richard left the house through the back entrance.
His driver pulled away.
Ethan made his decision.
"Cover for me."
Nathan frowned.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm finding out what Dad is hiding."
Richard's private study had always been off-limits.
Even as children, Ethan and Nathan were forbidden from entering without permission.
The heavy oak door was locked.
Ethan removed a small lock-picking tool from his wallet.
Nathan stared.
"You carry that?"
Ethan smiled faintly.
"I picked up strange hobbies in college."
Thirty seconds later...
Click.
The lock opened.
The room smelled of leather and old books.
Family portraits covered the walls.
Awards.
Photographs with presidents.
Business contracts.
Everything looked exactly as expected.
Too perfect.
Ethan searched carefully.
Desk drawers.
Bookshelves.
File cabinets.
Nothing.
Then he noticed one frame hanging slightly crooked.
He lifted it.
Behind it sat a small digital keypad.
Nathan's heartbeat quickened.
"A hidden safe."
Ethan entered Richard's birthday.
Access denied.
Their mother's birthday.
Denied.
The Whitmore company founding date.
Denied.
Nathan sighed.
"We're wasting our time."
As they turned to leave, Ethan stopped.
He looked toward the hallway.
Vanessa.
She was standing outside Richard's office in a family portrait taken just three months earlier.
Wearing the same necklace she wore every day.
Its pendant displayed a simple number.
0418.
Ethan typed it.
The keypad beeped once.
The safe unlocked.
Inside were dozens of neatly organized folders.
Investment records.
Trust agreements.
Private correspondence.
Then Ethan found a plain brown envelope labeled only one word.
Vanessa.
Nathan slowly opened it.
His hands froze.
Inside lay a signed confidentiality agreement.
Several receipts.
Photographs.
And a contract promising Vanessa five million dollars upon the successful birth of "the child."
Nathan's voice barely escaped.
"There is no child..."
Ethan kept reading.
His expression darkened.
"This isn't signed by Dad."
Nathan blinked.
"What?"
Ethan turned the final page around.
The signature at the bottom wasn't Richard Whitmore's.
It belonged to someone neither brother expected.
Claire.
Nathan felt the room spin.
His wife...
The woman he had believed was the victim...
Had signed the contract that paid Vanessa.
Nothing made sense anymore.

And for the first time since the nightmare began...
Ethan realized they might have been accusing the wrong person all along.
