Chapter 11 – The Brother No One Suspected

Nathan stared at the photograph until his vision blurred.
Michael Reynolds.
Claire's older brother.
The man who had stood beside him at his wedding. The man who had offered advice when business became overwhelming. The man who had repeatedly encouraged Nathan to "tell Claire the truth" about Vanessa's pregnancy.
It couldn't be him.
"It has to be fake," Nathan said.
Sophia shook her head.
"I hoped it was."
Ethan examined the photo more closely. Michael was shaking hands with a man exiting the private jet. In the background, barely visible, was the logo of an international investment firm.
Blackridge Capital.
The same investment group listed in the Whitmore succession documents.
The same company that would gain controlling shares if Nathan's marriage ended without a legitimate heir.
Olivia arrived twenty minutes later, carrying her laptop.
"I think I found the missing piece."
She connected the computer to a monitor inside the archive room.
A web of financial records filled the screen.
"Blackridge Capital looks independent," she explained. "But through a series of shell companies, someone quietly accumulated nearly twenty-eight percent of Whitmore Holdings."
Nathan frowned.
"So they're preparing for a takeover."
"Exactly."
"And Michael?"
Olivia clicked another file.
"He has been serving as Blackridge's confidential legal adviser for almost four years."
Nathan felt his stomach drop.
"He never told Claire."
"He couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because it's hidden through attorney-client privilege."
Sophia folded her arms.
"Michael knew your marriage was already under pressure."
"So he hired Vanessa?"
"No."
Harold answered this time.
"Michael hired an intermediary."
"Vanessa never knew who the real client was."
Ethan looked toward Harold.
"Then why the fake pregnancy?"
Harold sighed.
"Because nothing destroys trust faster than a child."
Nathan closed his eyes.
Every argument with Claire...
Every sleepless night...
Every tear...
Someone had calculated all of it.
Just then, Ethan's phone rang.
It was Claire.
He answered immediately.
"Claire?"
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"Ethan..."
"What happened?"
"I found something in Michael's office."
"What?"
"A file with my name on it."
Nathan stepped closer.
"What was inside?"
Claire's breathing became uneven.
"Our entire marriage."
Silence.
"He kept records of every disagreement..."
"Every counseling session..."
"Every anniversary..."
"Every financial decision..."
Nathan's face turned white.
"He was studying us."
"No," Claire corrected softly.
"He was preparing to break us."
Claire continued.
"There was one document I couldn't understand."
"What did it say?" Ethan asked.
"It was titled..."
She swallowed hard.
Operation Legacy.
Before anyone could respond, a loud crash echoed through the phone.
Claire screamed.
"Michael!"
The line filled with shouting.
A door slammed.
Then...
Silence.
The call disconnected.
Nathan didn't hesitate.
He grabbed his car keys and sprinted toward the exit.
Ethan and Olivia followed.
Sophia remained behind, staring at the abandoned phone on the table.
Her expression changed.
For the first time since they had met her again...
She looked genuinely afraid.
Because she knew something the others didn't.

If Michael had discovered that Claire found Operation Legacy...
He would never let her leave with it alive.
