Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Crash

"LIAR!"
The scream tore through the elegant silence of the ballroom. The heavy oak doors at the back of the hall had been violently shoved open.
A collective gasp rippled through the elite crowd. Security guards immediately reached for their earpieces, surging forward.
Standing in the doorway, panting heavily and sweating profusely, was Julian.
He was unrecognizable from the polished CEO he had been a month ago. He was wearing an ill-fitting, stolen waiter’s uniform. His hair was greasy and unkempt, his eyes wild and sunken, surrounded by dark bags of exhaustion and stress. He looked like a madman who had just crawled out of a sewer.
"Julian," I whispered into the microphone, my voice laced with absolute disgust.
"She's a liar!" Julian screamed, shoving past a stunned billionaire and storming down the center aisle toward the stage. "She stole this company from me! I built it! I built The Azure! I worked seventy-hour weeks while she sat at home doing nothing!"
Camera flashes began to go off like strobe lights. The media was eating this up. The fallen king, crashing the queen's coronation.
"Stop right there, Sterling," Alexander's voice boomed. He had stepped in front of the podium, his broad shoulders shielding me, his fists clenched at his sides. "Security, get this trespasser out of here."
"Don't you touch me!" Julian roared, dodging a security guard. He pointed a trembling, accusatory finger at me. "Tell them the truth, Elena! Tell them how you set me up! Tell them how you forged the debt papers to ruin my life!"
I placed a gentle hand on Alexander's shoulder, silently telling him to step aside. I didn't need a man to protect me anymore. I stepped out from behind the podium, standing at the very edge of the stage, looking down at my pathetic ex-husband.
"I didn't forge anything, Julian," I said smoothly, ensuring the microphones picked up every word. "You signed those documents with your own hand. And you didn't build this company. You took the credit while I did the work, and you funded your lavish lifestyle with my family's money."
"I LOVED YOU!" Julian screamed, tears of pure desperation streaming down his face. He fell to his knees in the middle of the ballroom, surrounded by the wealthiest people in the country. "I gave you the best years of my life! And you threw me away like garbage!"
The audacity was staggering.
"You loved me?" I asked, my tone dripping with venom. I snapped my fingers.
In the AV booth above, my security chief pressed a button. The massive digital screens behind the stage, which were meant to display charity logos, suddenly flickered.
High-definition audio and video flooded the ballroom. It was security footage from Julian’s old office, dated three months ago.
On the screen, Julian was violently pinning Chloe against his desk, kissing her deeply. "God, I can't wait to divorce that boring, frigid wife of mine," Julian's voice echoed through the ballroom, crisp and clear. "Once the Miami expansion is done, I'm taking half the assets, and we're leaving Elena with nothing but the dust."
The collective gasp from the crowd was deafening. The billionaires shook their heads in disgust. The reporters frantically recorded the screens.
Julian, still on his knees, turned pale as a ghost. He stared at the screens, watching his own betrayal broadcast to the entire world.
"You planned to steal my family's empire, Julian," I said, my voice cold and loud. "But you forgot the golden rule of business: Always know who owns the building."
I looked at Chief Hayes, who had just arrived with five massive security guards.
"Mr. Hayes. Mr. Sterling is violating a federal restraining order, trespassing on private property, and assaulting our guests. Please hand him over to the police waiting outside."
"No! No, Elena, please!" Julian shrieked as the guards grabbed him by his arms and legs, lifting him entirely off the floor. He kicked and thrashed like a wild animal. "You can't do this! I am the CEO! I am Julian Sterling!"
His screams faded as they dragged him out the heavy oak doors, tossing him into the hallway before slamming the doors shut behind him.
The ballroom was dead silent for three agonizing seconds.
Then, Alexander Vance started a slow clap.
One by one, the rest of the room joined in. The applause swelled into a deafening roar, a standing ovation from the most powerful people in the country.
I looked out at the glittering crowd, my chest rising and falling. The ghost of my past was finally exorcised. I turned to Alexander, who was looking at me with absolute awe and an unmistakable, burning desire.

"Shall we proceed with the evening, Mr. Vance?" I asked, a confident smile playing on my lips.
"Lead the way, Miss Vanguard," Alexander replied, bowing his head in reverence. "The empire is yours."
