Chapter 9 - The Vanguard Gala

The Azure had never looked more spectacular. The entire grand ballroom had been transformed into an enchanted midnight forest. Thousands of twinkling crystal lights hung from the ceiling, mimicking a starry sky. The tables were draped in black velvet and adorned with cascading arrangements of white orchids and silver branches.
Every billionaire, A-list celebrity, and political heavyweight in the state was in attendance. But they weren't there for the champagne or the caviar. They were there to witness the unmasking of the Vanguard Heiress.
I stood in the VIP suite above the ballroom, looking at my reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirror.
I wore a custom haute couture gown made of midnight-blue silk. It clung to my curves perfectly before flowing into a dramatic train. My hair was styled in an elegant, sweeping updo, and resting against my collarbone was my grandmother’s vintage emerald pendant—the one I had reclaimed from Chloe’s neck.
I looked powerful. I looked unbreakable.
There was a soft knock on the door, and Alexander stepped inside. He paused, his breath hitching slightly as his gray eyes swept over me.
"Elena," he murmured, his voice thick with admiration. "You look... catastrophic. You're going to give half the board of directors a heart attack."
I laughed softly, turning to face him. He looked devastatingly handsome in his sharp black tuxedo. "Let's hope not, Alexander. I need them alive to approve the European expansion."
He walked toward me, his gaze never leaving my face. He stopped just inches away, his presence electric and commanding. "Are you ready for this? Once you walk down those stairs, there's no going back to the quiet life. The world is going to know exactly who you are."
"I'm done hiding," I said, my voice steady. "I hid my light for nine years so a mediocre man could shine. Never again."
Alexander smiled, a genuine, warm expression that made my heart race. He offered me his arm. "Then let's go show them what a real empire looks like."
I linked my arm through his, and together, we walked out of the suite and toward the grand staircase that overlooked the ballroom.
As we reached the top of the stairs, the string quartet stopped playing. The low hum of conversation in the ballroom vanished instantly. Hundreds of faces turned upward, staring at us. The media pool at the bottom of the stairs erupted into a frenzy of flashing cameras.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer's voice boomed over the speakers. "May I present the CEO of Vanguard Holdings, Miss Elena Vanguard."
I descended the stairs slowly, my head held high, the emerald catching the light of a thousand flashbulbs. I felt the immense weight of my family’s legacy, but it didn't crush me. It lifted me up.
When we reached the floor, the crowd parted for me like the Red Sea. Billionaires who had once ignored me when I stood silently beside Julian were now practically tripping over themselves to shake my hand. Alexander stayed by my side, a formidable and protective presence, seamlessly guiding me through the sharks of high society.
Finally, I stepped up to the crystal podium at the front of the room. The microphones hummed to life. The room fell dead silent.
"Welcome to The Azure," I began, my voice echoing clearly. "For the past nine years, Vanguard Holdings has operated in the shadows. We built a standard of luxury that reshaped the global hospitality industry. But tonight, the shadows are gone."
The crowd erupted into polite applause.

"Tonight is about truth," I continued, scanning the glittering crowd. "It is about reclaiming what is rightfully ours and ensuring that those who attempt to exploit our legacy are removed from the board entirely."
Just as I prepared to announce the massive charity donation, a violent crash echoed from the back of the ballroom.
