Chapter 18 - Total Erasure

In the quiet, sterile visiting room of the federal correctional facility, Julian Sterling stared blankly at the metal table.

His hair was buzzed short, his face hollowed out by months of prison food and relentless stress. The arrogance that had once defined his every movement was entirely gone, replaced by a permanent, haunted slouch.

A guard tossed a small, clear plastic bag onto the table in front of him.

"What's this?" Julian asked, his voice raspy and defeated.

"Property inventory update," the guard grunted, leaning against the door frame. "Your final storage locker in the city was seized this morning by Vanguard Holdings to cover the remaining administrative court fees. That's everything you had left."

Julian’s trembling fingers picked up the plastic bag. Inside was a cheap silver watch he had owned before he ever met me, a few old college photographs, and a single, faded business card from his old days as a junior project manager.

That was it. Nine years of marriage, nine years of building an empire he claimed as his own, hundreds of millions in projected wealth—reduced to a ziplock bag of trash on a prison table.

He opened the bag and pulled out a photograph of himself and me, taken during our third anniversary trip to the Amalfi Coast. In the picture, I was smiling brightly, holding his arm, completely devoted to him. I had loved him. I had given him everything on a silver platter, letting him wear the crown while I built the throne.

And he had smashed it to pieces for a temporary distraction and bottomless greed.

Julian pressed his face into his hands, his shoulders shaking as silent, bitter tears soaked the prison-issued table. He wasn't just in prison; he was completely erased from the history of the world he thought he ruled.
