Chapter 14 - Shadows of the Past

While I was preparing for a new era of absolute power and freedom, Julian Sterling was learning the brutal realities of federal prison life.
The uniform was scratchy orange canvas. The cell block smelled of cheap bleach, unwashed bodies, and institutional despair.
Julian sat on the top bunk of Cell 112, staring mindlessly at the steel door. His hair, once meticulously styled with high-end pomade, was now unwashed and messy. The tailored Tom Ford suits had been replaced by oversized cotton trousers that dragged on the floor.
"Hey, Sterling," a gruff voice called out from the lower bunk. It was Miller, a convicted securities fraudster serving a ten-year sentence. "Mail call."
A folded envelope slid across the concrete floor and stopped at Julian’s boot.
Julian scrambled down from the bunk, his hands shaking as he picked up the envelope. There was no return address. Just his name, written in crisp, elegant cursive.
He tore it open. Inside was a single, heavy cardstock photograph.
It was a picture taken from a European lifestyle magazine. On the glossy paper, I stood on a private balcony overlooking Lake Geneva. I wore a breathtaking emerald-green evening gown that caught the sunlight, and around my neck, glowing with undeniable brilliance, was my grandmother's vintage emerald pendant.
Standing right beside me, with his arm possessively and tenderly wrapped around my waist, was Alexander Vance. We were both laughing—radiant, powerful, and utterly unstoppable.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a single sentence in neat, mocking handwriting:
Thanks for clearing the way.
Julian’s breath hitched. A guttural, animalistic cry tore from his throat. He crumpled the photograph in his fist, slamming it against the concrete wall over and over again until his knuckles bled.

He had tried to destroy me. He had tried to strip me of everything.
Instead, he had simply handed me the keys to a kingdom far greater than he could ever comprehend, while locking himself away in a cage of his own making.
