Chapter 6 - The Concrete Reality

The morning air outside The Azure was thick with humidity, but Julian felt freezing cold. He stood on the sidewalk, the roar of passing traffic a harsh contrast to the soundproofed, classical-music-filled lobby he had just been ejected from. Beside him, Chloe was violently tapping her phone screen, her face scrunched in a mixture of fury and disbelief.
"Call us an Uber Black, Julian," Chloe snapped, not looking up from her screen. "I am not standing out here like some kind of peasant. My feet are killing me."
Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. He pulled out his phone and opened the ride-sharing app. He selected a luxury SUV and hit confirm. A red exclamation point popped up on his screen.
Payment Method Declined. Please update your billing information.
Panic, cold and sharp, coiled in his stomach. He opened his digital wallet and switched to his platinum corporate card. Declined. He tried his personal gold card. Declined. He tried his emergency travel card. Declined.
"Well?" Chloe demanded, tapping her foot. "Where is it?"
"The... the network must be down," Julian stammered, frantically refreshing his banking app. The screen finally loaded. His jaw unhinged.
His checking account, which usually boasted a comfortable six-figure buffer, displayed a balance of $0.00. Beneath it, in glaring red font, was a notification: ACCOUNT FROZEN PENDING LEGAL REVIEW: VANGUARD HOLDINGS INC.
"Chloe," Julian whispered, the blood draining from his face. "They froze everything. My personal accounts, my savings, the offshore routing numbers. Everything."
Chloe finally looked up, her heavily lashed eyes narrowing. "What do you mean, everything? You said you had millions stashed away! You said if anything ever happened with Elena, we’d fly to St. Barts and live on a yacht!"
"I did!" Julian defended himself, his voice pitching higher. "But I used the company’s wealth management firm to set it up! I didn't know Vanguard owned the damn wealth management firm too!"
He was spiraling. For nine years, he had played the role of the brilliant, self-made titan of the hospitality industry. He had believed his own press clippings. He had genuinely convinced himself that Elena was just a quiet, supportive housewife who liked picking out curtains. He had entirely ignored the fact that every time they needed a massive loan, an anonymous backer miraculously approved it.
"So, we have no cars, no penthouse, and no money?" Chloe’s voice grew dangerously quiet. The sweet, adoring tone she usually used with him was completely gone. She looked at him not like a king, but like a piece of trash she had stepped on.
"It's just a temporary setback," Julian lied, trying to grab her hand. "I have powerful friends, Chloe. Investors. Politicians. I’ll make a few calls, and we'll be in a suite at the Four Seasons by noon."
He dialed Greg Thorne, his college fraternity brother and the supposed lead investor in their latest Miami expansion. Greg answered on the second ring.
"Greg, thank god," Julian breathed. "Listen, man, I need a massive favor. Elena completely lost her mind. She pulled some crazy legal stunt and locked me out of the company accounts. I need you to wire me fifty grand to tide me over, and I need to stay at your place in Malibu."
There was a long pause on the line. Then, Greg sighed. "Julian... you really didn't know, did you?"
"Know what?"
"Arthur Vanguard called me an hour ago," Greg said, his tone dripping with condescension. "Julian, the Vanguard family funded my investment firm. They own eighty percent of my equity. Elena personally vetted me to be your 'friend' in the industry so you wouldn't feel lonely at the top. I work for her."
Julian felt the sidewalk tilt beneath his feet. "You... you're lying."
"I'm really not," Greg replied smoothly. "And just a heads-up, Vanguard’s legal team is initiating an audit on your personal expenses. They know about the kickbacks you took from the contractors in Chicago. You're looking at federal prison, man. Don't ever call this number again." Click.
Julian slowly lowered the phone. Chloe was staring at him, having heard every word through the phone’s earpiece in the quiet morning air.
Without a single word, Chloe hailed a passing yellow taxi. It screeched to a halt at the curb. She opened the door and tossed her duffel bag inside.
"Chloe, wait, where are you going?" Julian pleaded, stepping toward her.

"Away from you, you broke loser," she sneered, her pretty face contorting into a mask of pure disgust. "I wasted a year of my life sleeping with a middle manager playing dress-up. Have fun in prison, Julian."
She slammed the taxi door in his face. Julian watched the cab speed away, leaving him entirely alone on the curb, his fake empire crumbling to dust around him.
